The word Riyasat translates to "kingdom," a throne that pass- es down through the ages; such is it with the distinctive ancient recipes served at this new Oak- ville restaurant. "When we chose dishes, we are presenting original old reci- pes as they came from our ances- tors; they are still the same way, so that's why we call it Riyasat," explained restaurant manager Simran Bansal. Oakville is an area where peo- ple are quite fond of Indian food; "like people love Indian food here," said Bansal, which is why the downtown location was cho- sen. "Seventy per cent of people who come in belong to some oth- er community than the Indians - British, Scottish ... Menu we have is quite different than others (In- dian restaurants)." Riyasat seats approximately 80 diners, with another 20 accom- modated on the outdoor patio. Owned by Mukesh Sharma, Riyasat opened in April but had its official grand opening this week. Riyasat's menu is a delectable listing of recipes from the north- ern Indian state of Punjab. Some of the most popular dishes are achari paneer tikka, cottage cheese cubes marinated in tangy Indian spices and cooked in a clay oven. "It is very good protein and as it is cooked in clay oven, it be- comes even healthier," said Ban- sal. There will be a free barbecue, a Junior Firefighter Challenge, fire rescue demonstrations, an antique fire truck, Sparky the Fire Dog and more for all ages.
