Balwant Singh, 50, plead- ed guilty in a Burlington court on Monday (Sept. 30) to a charge of voting in a vot- ing place where he was not entitled to vote contrary to section 89C of the Municipal Elections Act. He was fined $610. Singh was charged fol- lowing an investigation by the Ontario Provincial Po- lice anti-rackets branch into allegations of improprieties involving the 2018 election for Ward 7 regional council-for Ward 7 regional council-f lor. On May 23, 2019, the OPP announced that with the as- sistance of Halton police, an investigation resulted in charges against three Oak- ville residents. Singh was initially charged with corrupt prac- tice under the Municipal Elections Act, as were Na- nak Parmar, 72, and Nirmal Parmar, 62. Nirmal and Nanak Par- mar are the mother-in-law and father-in-law of Oak- ville Ward 7 town and re- gional councillor Pavan Par- mar. OPP Staff Sgt. Carolle Dionne said they are alleged to have voted in Ward 7 when they were not permit- ted to vote there. The OPP would not com- ment on exactly how this al- leged voting was accom- plished. Nanak and Nirmal Par- mar's charges continue to make their way through the court system. They are scheduled to next appear in a Burlington court on Oct. 28.
