My roommates and I found out who was running, got ourselves to the voting booth and did our duty. I've voted for different parties over the years. And although I've met some people who define themselves strictly along party lines, I've also met many who are fiscally- Conservative and social- ly-Liberal or some other combination. People vote a certain way because of a given issue or because they feel a connection with one leader over an- other. I 've also found that we're all more alike than different. People want to feel safe, earn a living, feel safe, earn a living,f stay healthy and live in a place where their chil- dren can fulfill their dreams and have a happy life. I reached out to the five candidates who appeared at the Chamber of Com- merce debate in Oakville to learn something that I might not know about their stories. James Elwick, re- presenting the Green Par- ty, asked that we not vote out of fear; instead be bold and vote for our children. He was inspired by his grandparents who fought in the Second World War. One was a prisoner of war and one fought in the Bat- tle of the Atlantic. He said that during that time our country mo- bilized the economy and went from having a very small navy to having the third largest navy in the world. So anything is possible if we all work together. His favourite book is Drawdown: The Most Comprehensive Plan Ever Proposed to Reverse Glob- al Warming edited by Paul Hawken. It is an optimistic and costed plan that includes 100 different ways to re- duce emissions - not just scientific ideas, but con- cepts like educating girls in developing countries, reducing food waste and Indigenous land manage- ment. Jerome Adamo of the NDP says that his main message is affordability when it comes to poverty, housing, childcare and pharma care. He asked if the government is work- ing for the right people when corporate loans are given and forgiven while students are straddled with debt. He said his upbringing taught him to be kind so his heart has always been firmly planted in socialfirmly planted in socialf justice. His favourite book is Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy as he was inspired to see a lead- er who helped the govern- ment adapt to a changing society. Conservative candi- date Terence Young has been in politics for many years, but he likes politi- cians who do politics dif- ferently. During his ten-ferently. During his ten-f ure he fought human traf- ficking at home andficking at home andf abroad, working with Shae Invidiata and Joy Smith. When Elizabeth May tabled the Federal Framework on Lyme Dis- ease, Terence seconded her proposal, showing how you can reach across the aisle to help constitu- ents. He also worked to en- sure that anyone building cell towers in Oakville would have to consult with the community first. When his 15-year-old daughter Vanessa died in 2000 after taking prescrip- tion medication for a stomach ailment, he worked with all parties to pass Vanessa's Law, The Protecting Canadians Against Unsafe Drugs Act, which received unan- imous support from the House of Commons. JD Meaney is re- presenting the People's Party of Canada. He is ac- tively fighting to make the cost of living better for ev- ery Canadian. He said the biggest lesson he learned from his parents is thatfrom his parents is thatf you are the average of the five people you spend thefive people you spend thef most time with. So choose wisely. His favourite book is How To Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie because, he said, it is timeless and holds great life lessons for people of all ages. Liberal representative Anita Anand feels her party's goal is to make life more affordable while taking care of Canadians. She noted that the Canada Child Benefit introduced by the Liberals years ago has lifted 900,000 people out of poverty and was in- creased in July. S he has heard from groups across Halton say- ing this benefit has been instrumental in the work they do. She said her fami- ly immigrated to Canada and settled in Nova Sco- tia. She remembers as a young child being brought to an air field where a helicopter was circling above, getting ready to land. Once on the ground, the door opened, a man stepped out and walked over to the group of by- standers. He stopped in front of Anita's mother, front of Anita's mother,f who was wearing a sari, put his hands together and said, "Namaste." The man was Pierre Elliott Trudeau. In that moment she said she felt so accept- ed and she knew what it meant to be Canadian. She never forgot her mother telling her "your country needs you so do what you can to give back." We live our life in sto-We live our life in sto-W ries. We stand by the wa- ter cooler at work and tell stories about our chil- dren, our weekends away, our future plans. Stories can make you laugh and cry and grow and feel something. These are the stories shared by the people who have offered to represent us. Maybe they will move you as you make your choice. Good luck with your re- search and don't forget to vote on Oct. 21. Election citizen jour- nalist Siobhan Kukolic is a blogger and author.
