Business in Oakville The Kind Matter Co expands zero-waste store to Oakville Striving to improve the environmental health and qual- ity of life for her community is a top priority for entrepre- neur, Laura Newton. What originally began as an online shop where eco-friendly, Canadian-made goods can be purchased recently expanded into its first brick and mortar business in Milton nine months ago. Now, it has made its way to Oakville on 282 B Kerr Street. "I didn't intend to have a zero-waste business. It's just been my lifestyle," says Laura. "I started my journey to sus- tainability many years ago and I realized that for others to incorporate it in their lives, they will need these items to be accessible to them." For a long time, many of Laura's regulars are Oakville natives. She would have many locals drive from their home in Oakville to the only free-standing store in Milton to pur-in Oakville to the only free-standing store in Milton to pur-in Oakville to the only free-standing store in Milton to pur chase their sustainable products. She believes for a zero- waste lifestyle to work long-term, it needs to be accessible to everyone, and expanding locations only made sense. The Kind Matter Co carries a wide range of everyday products such as reusable bulk food bags, bamboo cutlery, reusable paper towels, natural soaps, ethical and sustain- able (slow) fashion pieces, and much more. It's the perfect one-stop-shop for unique, green items. It also features refill stations, where you can restock hand soap, shampoo, and cleaning supplies. "I feel a huge pull to have refills available to people where they can bring their containers, instead of having to purchase new packag-their containers, instead of having to purchase new packag-their containers, instead of having to purchase new packag ing for items they already have - this isn't a service I could have with just an online store," Laura says. Sustainability and zero-waste products can be over-Sustainability and zero-waste products can be over-Sustainability and zero-waste products can be over whelming for those who want to reduce their carbon footprint, and Laura is here to help. "Sustainability is very new to a lot of people, it's not like walking into a shop and picking up a product you've been using for years and knowing what it is. A lot of the products we carry are brand new to people," she says. "They need to get the information along with the product. They need to know how it works, why it works, and why their choice will make a positive impact on the environment." Laura is passionate about the zero-waste movement and wants to help those who have been thinking about making the change. "Being able to speak to custom- ers, educate them, and share my own experience was a big reason to open up a free-standing store in Oakville," she says. The handmade products offered also support local artisans too. "When it comes to the products we focus on and sell, many of them come from local artisans and small Canadian businesses. A lot of people love to hear that their products are handmade from real people in our community." The Kind Matter Co is located at 282 B Kerr Street, Oakville.
