(905) 469-3232 1459 Nottinghill Gate, Oakville Halton police and Oak- ville Hydro are warning residents not to be taken in by a hydro disconnection scam that appears to be making the rounds in Oak- ville. On Tuesday, Feb. 18 Oak- ville Hydro took to social media warning that several of their customers have re- ported getting phone calls from someone claiming tofrom someone claiming tof be the local utility. The individual tells the customer there is a balance owing that needs to be paid and threatens to disconnect the power if the payment is not made immediately. "This is not Oakville Hy- dro," the utility said in a tweet. "We do not threaten im- mediate disconnection." Oakvile Hydro Commu- nications Specialist Cas- sandra Umbriaco says that as of Feb. 20 the utility has received about 35 calls from customers reporting this scam. She said the calls ap- pear to have started Feb. 15 and are being carried out by an actual person, as op- posed to a recording. Halton police said in sev- eral of these calls the indi- vidual requested to be paid in Bitcoin. Officers have previously said a utility provider will never ask to be paid in this manner. Oakville Hydro said that if residents receive a call they are unsure about they should immediately hang up and call the utility at 905- 825-9400. They can also re- port the scam to the Canadi- an Anti-Fraud Centre at 1- 888-495-8501. Oakville Hydro and Hal- ton police are also remind- ing residents not to share personal or financial infor- mation with the caller. This is not the first time this particular scam has ap- peared in Oakville. Oakville Hydro reported several households receiv- ing similar threats unless payments were made in September 2019.
