Canada's best-known ro- bo-advisor's founder was full of enthusiasm in 2017 at the opportunity to disrupt the mutual fund distribution business. This included fi- nancial advisers and the Big Five banks that distribute funds through their branchfunds through their branchf network. Disruption, then and now, is the dream of many entrepreneurs who try and use innovative technological methods to make an estab- lished industry obsolete. Entrepreneurs are at- tempting to replicate a suc- cessful ride-sharing busi- ness model in other business segments, capturing fame and fortune in the process. There are several obsta- cles for robo-advisors. The initial target market for this automated guidance and ser- vice is millennials. This tech-savvy segment are ear- ly adopters, who do their fi- nancial work on their smart- phones. Unfortunately, charging low fees to a group that has minimal investment amounts does not come close to generating the revenue needed to be profitable. For- tunately, robo-advisor firms are developing sophisticated technical processes that can add value to those that dis- tribute funds. Several robo-advisors have expanded their revenue base to include advisers that are licensed to use their tech- nology. Ironically, this is one of the very segments that ro- bo-advisors are trying to dis- rupt. The fundamental ques- tion is if more Canadians will eventually transition to a robo-advisor.
