A woman who went into active labour in a vehicle at the side of an Oakville road on Valentine's Day has de- cided to name her baby boy after his impromptu birth- place. Christiana Cole said her new son actually showed up on his due date but, as the result of a series of twists and turns, he ended up being born at Tremaine Road, near Dundas Street, and not at Oakville Trafal- gar Memorial Hospital (OTMH). Cole noted she and her partner, Ivan Bruce, re- cently moved from Bur- lington to Guelph, but Cole's doctor was at OTMH, where she intend- ed to have her baby. For Cole, Valentine's Day began with contrac- tions. "I went to the hospital and they checked, and they said I wasn't quite ready yet," said Cole. "They said I could either hang around or go home and when things get in- tense, or to the point where I can't take the pain any- more, come in." Ultimately the couple decided to head home. By 5 p.m., Cole said the contractions had gotten stronger, but she feared go- ing to the hospital prema- turely again and decided to wait a bit longer. One hour later, the cou- ple got in their car and started to make the trip from Guelph to OTMH. At that time the contrac- tions were still not that bad, Cole said, but they in- tensified significantly as the journey continued. "We were on Tremaine Road going down toward Dundas ... and I just couldn't hold it," said Cole. "I said, 'The baby's com- ing. I think the baby's com- ing.'" Bruce noted they were almost at the hospital and questioned whether Cole was being serious. When Cole made it clear that she was serious, Bruce grabbed his phone and called for an ambulance. "I was like, 'I cannot hold it. He is coming,'" said Cole. "I was yelling and screaming because I was in pain. He (was) trying to talk to the ambulance, but couldn't hear because I was screaming." Bruce eventually pulled the car over. At this point the baby's head was al- ready out, Cole said. Halton police Const. Na- dia Carle and Halton EMS arrived on the scene just in time. Carle saw Bruce catch his son as he was born on the passenger seat of the car. The constable said she was relieved to hear the ba- by cry moments later. "Honestly, it was all the parents. They did such an amazing job," said Carle. "I just remember seeing the stunned look on the fa- ther's face. Him just being so surprised, shocked, ner- vous all in one." Cole and baby were then taken by ambulance to OTMH. Both mother and baby are doing fine, and Cole has even given her son a special name to commemorate his choice of birthplace. "His name is Tremayne actually," said Cole. "We first thought his name would be Malcolm, but then were like, 'No this has a story to it.'" Cole said she would like to thank Halton police and EMS for their help that night as well as the doctors and nurses at the OTMH maternity Unit.
