THE STAMPEDERS May 7 @ 7:30PM - Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts - 905 815 2021 Tour details @ stampeders.net or shantero.com The coronavirus has found its way to Halton, with -- at press time Tues- day -- four confirmed cases in the region, including one in Oakville. That involves a woman in her 40s who travelled to Colorado earlier this month and became symp- tomatic on Mar. 7. She was tested three days later at Burlington's Joseph Brant Hospital and found to be in- fected. "I would like to reassure residents that the risk in our community remains low at this time, and we are working to identify known contacts and assess any po- tential health risk," said Dr. Hamidah Meghani, Halton Region's Medical Officer of Health. Added Joseph Brant Hospital President and CEO Eric Vandewall, "When the individual came to Joseph Brant Hospital for testing, it was complet- ed in an isolated environ- ment, with our care team following all infection pre- vention protocols and pro- cedures." The woman is currently in self-isolated, as are three Burlington residents -- two women and a man -- who are all returning from re- cent trips to the U.S. Town of Oakville offi- cials have been busy keep- ing residents informed of sweeping closures -- in- cluding recreational facili- ties, libraries and enter- tainment venues -- and precautionary measures being taken to keep the community safe. "Oakville is known for our ability to come together as a community," Tweeted Mayor Rob Burton. "Dur- ing this time it's important that we work together for the well-being of everyone." Restaurants across town are feeling the finan- cial pinch of unusually slow business, while gro- cery stores have seen huge lineups and mass consump- tion of toilet paper and a number of food staples. That's triggered a sud- den decline in donations to area food banks. Meanwhile, parents are scrambling to keep their young ones occupied, as March Break camps and programs were cancelled late last week. Publicly-funded schools across Ontario won't be re- opening until April 6, nor will independent schools like Appleby College. Classes are also sus- pended at Sheridan Col- lege. Contact Halton Region Public Health by calling 311, 905-825-6000 or toll free at 1- 866-442-5866 if you have a fe- ver or cough or breathing difficulty and any of the fol- lowing: • travelled outside of Canada in the 14 days before onset of illness; or • close contact with a confirmed case of CO- VID-19; or • close contact with a person with acute respira- tory illness who travelled to affected areas within 14 days prior to their illness onset. The best way to prevent the spread of respiratory vi- ruses, including COVID-19 is to: • stay home when ill; • cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or sleeve; • wash hands with soap and water or with alcohol- based hand rub; and • clean and disinfect ob- jects and surfaces.
