New certificates added daily The Town of Oakville has announced that it will tem- porarily lay off an estimated 800 part-time, casual and temporary staff effective Monday, April 6. The layoffs were an- nounced Friday, April 3, the same day the Town noted that due to the ongoing CO- VID-19 crisis the Town is cancelling all spring recre- ation and culture programs and cancelling sports field and facility rentals until the end of May. The closure of all town facilities is also being ex-facilities is also being ex-f tended. "This was not an easy de- cision to make and we rec- ognize that this will have a significant impact on the lives of our employees and their families," said the Town's acting chief admin-Town's acting chief admin-T istrative officer, Jane Clohe- cy. "This decision reflects the very challenging impact that COVID-19 is having on our services and on our community." Clohecy said the layoffs are temporary and staff will be brought back once recov- ery efforts begin. Oakville Mayor Rob Bur- ton discussed the ongoing facility closures and pro-facility closures and pro-f gram cancellations. "Public health officials are advising the town that efforts to contain the spread of COVID-19 must remain strong through the coming weeks, and even months," said Burton. "The town is continuing to work closely with the province, the region and lo- cal businesses to support ac- tions to combat the spread of COVID-19 in the commu- nity and we will reopen parks and facilities only when it is safe to do so." The Town is continuing to deliver only those critical business services that pro- tect and support the safety of the community and vital infrastructure, as well as those services required to fulfil contractual, legal andfulfil contractual, legal andf legislative requirements. "We are reviewing our level of services weekly and will bring back additional services as soon as it is safe and practical to do so," said Clohecy.
