#NVW2020 NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK 2020 APRIL 19-25 Volunteers are leading social change around the world, an effort that is celebrated during National Volunteer Week, held this year from April 19 to 25. International Volunteer Day (IVD) was created by United National Volunteers in 1985 to herald the work of all volun- teers: locally, nationally and internationally. No matter where they are in the world, volunteers work together to improve their communities and that effort has a valuable global impact. This year's campaign theme is a celebration of the com- mitment, dedication and selflessness that are the hallmarks of volunteerism. The theme is: "It's time to applaud our nation's volunteers." From coast to coast to coast, Canada's volunteers work tire- lessly to spur progress in their community, city and country. They give their time in support of causes and programs they believe in, and ask for nothing in return. The economic and community impacts of volunteering are plentiful. They contribute millions of hours and millions more in value and for this -- and many other reasons -- volunteers are brought into the spotlight. The charitable and non-profit sector in Canada is strength- ened by the unwavering support of volunteers. Without them, entire organizations would cease to exist and many Canadians would go without the help they need. From fostering cats and dogs to sorting groceries at a food bank, to organizing a fundraiser -- volunteers add value. Volunteer Week celebrates commitment The Dinner Party event held on International Women's Day in 2018 was a fundraiser for Sexual Assault & Violence Intervention Services (SAVIS) of Halton presented by the Women of Halton Action Movement (WHAM) and the Zonta Club of Oakville. SAVIS offers a 24-hour support and crisis line, as well as public education workshops. They also launched Halton Women's Place's #youtoo campaign. Halton Women's Place provides shelter and crisis support for abused women in the region and relies on volunteer support for programs and fundraising throughout the year.
