In a statement issued on Thursday, June 11, the mayor said the bylaw was repealed to recognize how far the community has come in moving toward a "new nor- mal," and to support efforts to move forward with recov- ery. "Oakville residents have done an exceptional job in slowing the spread of CO- VID-19 in our community," said Burton. "We adopted this bylaw at the height of the pandemic and it did its job. We all know now how important physical distancing is to keep our- selves and our families safe, and that is a far better incen- tive to practise physical dis- tancing than a ticket." The mayor stressed that while the bylaw is being re- pealed, residents still need to follow public health guide-follow public health guide-f lines to stay home if they feel sick, wash their hands fre- quently, continue to practise physical distancing, wear a face covering if physical dis-face covering if physical dis-f tancing is not possible, and follow all provincial emer-follow all provincial emer-f gency orders. The town's bylaw enforce- ment officers will still be re- sponding to complaints about violations of provin- cial emergency orders on so- cial gatherings. As of Friday, June 12, groups of up to 10 people may gather in public spaces, but physical distancing must still be maintained. The town's senior com- munications advisor Jill Ma- cInnes noted that between April 3, when the Oakville physical distancing bylaw was enacted, and June 11 when it was repealed, a total of 27 tickets were issued un- der this bylaw. MacInnes confirmed that no one received the $100,000 maximum fine. Burton also said repeal- ing the bylaw will eliminate confusion on whether the by- law would impact efforts to support local economic re- covery by allowing more out- door dining patios and dis- play areas in commercial districts. "While Halton Region and Oakville have not yet been approved to move into Phase 2 of recovery, which would allow for outside din- ing, we want to be ready and provide clarity to businesses on the rules that will be in place when this does hap- pen," said Burton. Those who wish to report violations to the province's emergency orders, such as social gatherings larger than 10 people and physical dis- tancing violations, can still call Service Oakville at 905- 825-6601 and a bylaw enforce- ment officer will be dis- patched for follow-up.
