This needs more aware- ness! I'm a 28-year-old angler living in Oakville. Angling gives me a sense of mean- ing in life, taking me away from self-destructive beha- viours and helping me through devastating peri- ods. I moved to Oakville from Vancouver in 2018 and have gotten to know the community of anglers that have, in some cases, fished here for more than 30 years. Apparently this fishing ban isn't new, according to an Oakville bylaw, yelling out to me from an opposite pier at Sixteen Mile Creek. But it was news to me and every angler I have spoken to about it so far, including industry professionals. Ev- eryone is surprised and up- set. Salmon season is essen- tially cancelled for shore anglers. Pier fishing and the community around has given me a real sense of be- ing at home and belonging in this place. Evidently, fishing in general is part of the local legacy, culture and history. Piers are easily accessi- ble public places where the elderly, people with certain health conditions, and peo- ple with disabilities can go to fish. I believe the hazard posed by responsible an- glers is forgivable. There is plenty of space for every- body to go about their day safely, accompanied by simple mindfulness of their surroundings and ba- sic etiquette. I believe piers should be open for anglers to access and enjoy responsibly and while being mindful of oth- er users, private property and pets year round. DAWID BURGER, OAKVILLE LET'S SHOW OUR COMPASSION FOR FIRE VICTIMS There are few circum- stances in life that are worse than sudden trage- dy. Those who experience the tragedy first-hand need and deserve compassion of their community and neighbourhood. The recent fire off Ma- rine Drive has shaken our community specifically. We are a close-knit, kind and neighbourly group that ex- hibit the essence of Oakville -- a warm "hello" on the lake path from a stranger is never uncommon. Unfortunately, the fire in this community has made some of us forget the kindness and compassion of this community that the property victims so richly need at this time. May I please make a re- quest of those who actively choose to stop by the site of the fire, from behind or in front of our neighbour's hurt homes? Perhaps, instead of pointing fingers at the damage in awe, they in- stead, point their energy to compassionate prayer for the affected families; med- itating on the word "heal- ing"; and finally, remem- bering the neighbourhood ethos we are all blessed to be a part of.
