Jed Gardner was looking through a large collection of military items that were part of an estate that was downsizing. Out of the approximately 400 pieces that had been col- lected over the years, two guns caught his attention. Gardner, who has oper- ated Turner Chapel An- tiques on Lakeshore Road in Oakville since 2002, was intrigued by the gold fili- gree on the pistols. "The gold work was quite im- pressive," he said. Gard- ner's interest was also piqued by a family crest, a Latin inscription, and the initials of the owner, RDMC. The crest, a hand holding a dagger and a boar's head with the motto Feros Ferio -- I am fierce with the fierce -- belonged to the Chisholm clan of Scotland. Using hallmarks -- stamps that provide infor- mation about when and where the guns were made -- Gardner began re- searching the pistols. That led him to an inter- esting find. "Honestly, I've seen so many unusual things over the years that I'm usually unimpressed," Gardner said. "But I was amazed at the coincidence." The pistols belonged to Roderick Donald Mathe- son Chisholm, a relative of Oakville's founder Colonel William Chisholm. The guns are duelling pistols, that would have fired round bullets and been muzzle loaded. Gardner said while the pistols have an 18th centu- ry look to them, after con- sulting with experts, he said they are most likely a 19th century reproduction of an 18th century gun. Though the current owner of the guns believes he bought them in Toronto, he doesn't remember much else about the purchase. Gardner would like to try to track the ownership his- tory of the pistols. "I've found a bunch of other things, photographs and silver pieces," Gardner said, "but this is by far my most significant find as it relates to Oakville." The pistols are valued at about $30,000. Gardner said if the pistols are bought by another collector, "they will likely disappear for an- other 50 years until they come up in another estate sale." For that reason, Gard- ner is hoping they'll find a home locally, preferably in a museum. "I'd like to see them stay in Oakville," Gardner said. HISTORIC DISCOVERY Jed Gardner, a local antiques dealer, discovered two duelling pistols in an estate collection. Using markings on the pistols, he traced them back to Roderick Donald Matheson Chisholm, a relative of Oakville's founder, Colonel William Chisholm.
