Oakville anglers who are un- happy with the 'no fishing' signs that appeared at the town's piers this summer will be able to make their case before council in early 2021. Ward 2 councillors Ray Chis- holm and Cathy Duddeck have called on town staff to put togeth- er a report on the rationale for fishing restrictions at inner har- bours, piers and waterfront parks in Oakville during the first quar- ter of 2021. They also requested town staff include possible revisions to the fishing restrictions in their re- port. "We were unaware that there was actually a bylaw that the Town of Oakville has, prohibiting fishing off the piers," said Dud- deck. "It really struck me as odd. Both Ray and I discussed it and decided that before we turn around and veto whatever is on the books, let's find out the ratio- nale behind why it was put in place to begin with." Many local anglers say they were caught off guard when 'no fishing' signs recently appeared at areas where they had traditional- ly enjoyed fishing, such as at the East Bronte Pier and Oakville Harbour Pier. When reached for comment, the town's director of parks and open space, Chris Mark, said for more than 25 years fishing has been prohibited in Oakville's har- bours and off the various water- front parks between April and No- vember. He noted during that period the waterfront is busy with boat and pedestrian traffic and, as such, fishing is prohibited for safety reasons. Mark said people are probably only becoming aware of the re- strictions now because of greater enforcement and a larger number of signs being put up as a result of more people gathering at the wa- terfront in 2020. "We just see a real safety issue with people fishing and pedestri- ans in such close proximity to each other, being on the pier, be- ing on the walkways that are ad- jacent to the lake," said Mark in a previous interview. Fishing is permitted off the lake side of the West Bronte Pier, which is less popular with pedes- trians. News of the restrictions were not well received by many resi- dents. A change.org petition started about a month ago in an attempt to reverse the restrictions suc- ceeded in getting more than 1,100 signatures as of Sept. 29. "Fishing is a safe solo pastime that has enormous mental health benefits," wrote Alex Woolacott in the petition's comment section. "With the amount people have already lost due to COVID, don't take this away. For many, fishing is more than just a hobby, it is an escape. It lets them clear their heads of these times. People need this." Duddeck said town staff have reached out to the various local fishing groups to get their input. Members of the public will have the opportunity to delegate during the meeting where the re- port is discussed. An exact date for that meeting has yet to be scheduled. Duddeck, who grew up in Oak- ville, says she has memories of fishing at the piers and wants oth- ers to be able to enjoy the same ex- perience. "Especially at Bronte, where it was a fishing village ... Many peo- ple in Oakville have fond memo- ries of being able to go down there. You don't have to have a fancy boat. You would just put a rod in the water and fish," said Duddeck. "Like I said, unless there is some huge personal liability issue that I am unaware of I would like to see this vetoed." COUNCIL TO TAKE FRESH LOOK AT PIER FISHING RESTRICTIONS Anglers line the pier, while physically distancing, as they cast their lines as the sun begins to set at Bronte Harbour.
