The organization, which provides healthy meals and social interac- tion for seniors and vulner- able people in the Oakville community, recently an- nounced that it had deliv- ered the milestone meal. "When we started in 1976, we delivered just over 1,000 meals to Oakville residents during the whole year," says Michelle Nichols, manager of client services for Oak- ville Meals on Wheels. "To- day, we deliver over 500 hot and frozen meals to clients each week. And that need has grown during the CO- VID-19 pandemic as more people, especially Oakville's more vulnerable citizens, stay home and self-isolate." Nichols said the mil- lionth meal came at a unique time when many families were not able to celebrate Thanksgiving to- gether due to COVID-19 re- strictions. "A hot meal and the so- cialization offered by our skilled volunteers is even more important to the cli- ents we serve during holi- day times, especially when family interaction is not al- lowed," said Nichols. Oakville Meals on Wheels staff say they have recognized a growing need for nutritious meals and a daily wellness check with demand doubling during the past year. They said this has chal- lenged the organization to find different ways to raise funds. Money donated to Oak- ville Meals on Wheels is primarily used to subsidize the cost of meals for those unable to pay. For more information or to donate visit oakville- mealsonwheels.com.
