15 | O akville B eaver | T hursday,F ebruary 25,2021 insidehalton.com New Choose Fresh Options At Kerr Street Mission we are always looking for ways to improve the programming we offer our community. Part of our mission statement is to help those in need reach a healthier, more sustainable situation. Our Choose Fresh program is one of the ways we accomplish this. Choose Fresh is a healthy, fresh food program where clients contribute $20 a month and receive $80 of fresh food items. We recently expanded the options in the program adding halal chicken, beef, vegetarian and vegan options. We're happy to be able to expand to serve more of our community and help them access fresh, healthy foods. In addition to the Choose Fresh box, clients will continue to be able to access our food market at no cost each week for fresh bread, reclaimed produce and proteins, non-perishable foods and hygiene products as available. None of this would be possible without our kind donors. Thank you for helping make this happen. And when the opportunity arose to provide visual encour- agement for that dream, the more artistic one of the siblings -- who's lived in Oakville for more than 20 years now -- was only too happy to do so. "I remember as kids he had me paint a huge moonscape, tak- ing up an entire wall of his bed- room," said Stephen of his broth- er Peter, a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) veteran who was part of the mission control team behind last Thursday's Mars Perseverance Rover land- ing. For Stephen, the moments of brotherly admiration have been too numerous to count since those childhood days. And another major one pre- sented itself when Dr. Ilott's crew in Pasadena, California, cele- brated the successful landing on the Red Planet -- completing a six-month, nearly 300-million- mile journey. Shortly after, Twitter show- cased the first images from the affectionately named "Percy." "Super proud of him. He's al- ways been the space guy. He got my father's engineering science smarts. I got my mother's artistic and writing skills," said Stephen, who became a professional orga- nizer after years as an engineer with the CBC. Stephen texted his space-ex- ploring brother during some down moments on Thursday to "make sure Mum was watching." Of course, that was hardly the first light-hearted exchange the siblings have shared over the years. "We would trade notes now and then. He'd say, 'We're send- ing a probe onto a comet today -- very tricky manoeuvre. You?" And I'd say, 'Yeah, I'm declutter- ing a lady's basement today -- very tricky manoeuvre.'" As the director of the telecom- munications section of JPL, Dr. Ilott has worked on several Mars landings, such as MER, Phoenix and Insight. "Very glad our hard work paid off that we will have another ro- ver to explore Mars with," Dr. Ilott told insidehalton.com Fri- day, through his brother. "We don't know a fraction of the data and information and small dis- coveries and large they make on many fronts, geological, plane- tary, biological etc." Perseverance will be quite busy over the next few years. Among its more notable tasks will be exploring the Jezero Cra- ter, the site of an ancient lake that existed 3.9 billion years ago.
