in si de ha lto n. co m O ak vi lle B ea ve r | T hu rs da y, M ar ch 11 ,2 02 1 | 20 We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Elfriede (Mohrle) Perkovic, age 91, on Wednesday March 3rd, 2021, peacefully at home surrounded by family and loved ones. Mohrle was predeceased by her beloved and devoted husband of 65 years, Stipo (Steve) who passed away in October 2020. She was the proud and loving mother of Maureen and Peter (Sharon) and beloved grandmother to Laura, John (Kaitlyn), Katherine (Phil) and Stephen. Mom is predeceased by her parents Hans and Barbara and siblings Joseph, Ruth, Rudolph, Karl and Erwin. Sister to Gerda of Ravensburg, Germany. Sister-in-law to Peter Perkovic (Nancy) of Oakville and aunt to Patti (David) of Burlington and Stephen (Shari) of VancouverVancouverV Island. Sorely missed by lifelong friends Marko and Louisa Vukorepa (65 years) of Mississauga. 'Kuma' to Sonya Vukorepa. Mom was born in Langenargen and raised in the ancient town of Ravensburg (home to world famous Ravensburger jigsaw puzzles), in the Upper Swabia region of Germany. Mom immigrated to Canada in 1953 via Halifax and settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba to work initially as a domestic and then as a pastry chef at the Winnipeg General Hospital. And it's in Winnipeg where she met the love of her life, Stipo. Dad spoke Croatian. Mom spoke German. Neither spoke English. Despite the language difference, they soon moved to Windsor, where they got married on November 5, 1955 - promptly having Peter in late 1956. Shortly thereafter, the young family headed north to Onaping (near Sudbury) where Dad worked for Falconbridge and Mom remained a homemaker. It was in Onaping that Mom & Dad built their first house - and welcomed Maureen in 1961. In 1963 the young family moved to Oakville seeking greater opportunities, and where they remained for the past 58 years. In Oakville, Dad became a licensed electrician working for, and retiring from, Westroc Industries. Mom returned to work in 1967, employed by and retiring from the General Electric Consumer and Industrial (lightbulb manufacturing) plant in Oakville. Mom enjoyed a great variety of music, from Perry Como, 50's & 60's 'oldies', Christmas carols, to Josh Groban. But she was particularly passionate about Il Divo & Elvis. Especially listening to Elvis! Nothing made her happier. So, it was only appropriate that, at her request, Elvis gospel songs were softly playing in her room as she prepared to say goodbye. She was a fantastic cook and baker and generous to a fault in sharing her culinary bounty. Christmas cookie season was a tradition that saw hundreds upon hundreds of cookies baked and gifted or donated - Mom's 'monster' cookies and almond cake were legendary! And somehow Mom's spaghetti sauce, made primarily from grocery store pasta sauce, contained several secret ingredients that everyone drooled over. Same with Mom's famous goulash and chicken soup - an incredible taste no one could replicate. Mom was passionate about many other things as well - the colour purple, fall drives to wine country for concord grapes, 'Everybody Loves Raymond', her old VW Beetle, a little 'happy time' (aka Bailey's) every night, being an avid Argos fan, creating countless 'trick or treat' bags for Halloween, dying and hiding dozens of easter eggs around the house, the Liberal party, worrying about everything, smiling and staring at people, saying hello to perfect strangers, bringing gifts to every Dr. appointment... and flirting with any men in uniform (policemen, firemen, HVACHVACHV techs etc.) Mom suffered a postoperative stroke back in 2004 that seriously compromised her independence and her ability to care for herself. Nonetheless, Mom soldiered on, enduring her many health adversities courageously, with quiet dignity and grace - and always with a smile and kindness that knew no bounds. Mom suffered a second stroke back in September. Sadly, the health challenges and complications that followed were too much for her to overcome. Our heartfelt thanks go out to Josephine Arguez, Mom's guardian angel and full- time caregiver, and her amazing team (Mimi Jancilan, Josie - Rose Arguez, Ellen McPhail) for their compassionate and professional care of our Mom over these 15 plus years. Special thanks to Dr. Danielle Gentile, Silas and Star from LHIN Palliative Care and our long time 'part of our family' PSWs Josette Murphy, Jocelyn Greene and Sandra Ighodaro of Acclaim Health for their exceptional kindness and compassion. And a very special thanks to Mom's niece, Patti McLaren (Manager, Cardiorespiratory and Neurodiagnostic Services, Halton Healthcare Services). ToToT Patti, our Mom was 'Teta'Teta'T Mohrle'. ToToT our Mom, Patti was 'my angel'. Throughout all of our Mom's hospital visits these past 15+ years, Patti was always there for her. ToToT be a welcome and familiar face and a comforting presence that always made Mom feel completely safe and reassured. For that compassion, and Patti's medical expertise that supported not only Mom, but our entire family, we shall forever be thankful and in her debt. Mom touched everyone she met with her limitless kindness, thoughtfulness, generosity, willingness to help others and her care for others above herself. And in doing so, she taught us how to live a life of true significance. She left us with so many stories and lessons to share, we'll never stop holding them close to our hearts and striving to live our lives in a similarly significant way that would make Mom proud. And so, Mom left us just as she lived her life - with dignity and love.
