Any Year, Make or Model WE'RE HONEST & FAIR Hamilton - GTA - Niagara 905-321-9121 WBUR.ca HATCH, Arlene (Ratcliffe) July 13, 1942 - March 2, 2021 ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ Heaven has gained an extra special angel. Arlene was born in Toronto and lived in Hamilton prior to her family relocating to rural Rockwood when she was a young girl. She grew up in Rockwood and eventually attended John Ross Secondary School in Guelph. It was during the bus ride to school where she met her lifelong sweetheart George. Arlene and George were married on July 25, 1964 and relocated to Oakville where Arlene worked as an RNA at OTMH and George worked at the Ford Motor Company. They eventually bought their first and only home together and welcomed daughter Michelle into their family. Arlene was a loving mother who stayed at home for the first few years, eventually returning to work at Searle Canada and then Sears, where she stayed until retiring in 2000. She was also a proud AVON representative for many years and the recipient of several awards during this time. Arlene had many interests and hobbies over the years including knitting, sewing, cross stitch, needle point, crocheting, baking, gardening, camping with family and friends, bird watching, walking, photography, scrap- booking, and reading. Although not always confident in her performance, Arlene loved to sing with the Munn's United Church choir and this connection brought her happiness even in her final days. In her younger years she enjoyed snowmobiling, cross country skiing and tobogg- aning. She loved animals and was never without cats or dogs in the house, often multiple of each. Arlene was altruistic by nature and volunteered as the Brown Owl for the local Brownie Pack, made blankets for the animals at the Oakville Humane society, and was also a member of the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog program in Oakville with her rescue dog Chloe. The Terry Fox Foundation was near and dear to her, and she participated each year in the annual run/walk since 1996 in honour of her sister Diane. Arlene loved to travel, and she and George took several trips within Canada and into the U.S. with their travel trailer both prior to and during their retirement. They were often joined on these trips by their dear lifelong friends Ray and Ellen. Over the past several years, they enjoyed their seasonal trailer in Oliphant, exploring the Bruce Peninsula and enjoying time with family and friends. Arlene had a great sense of humour and enjoyed playing cards and board games with family and friends while visiting. Arlene was fond of geocaching and enjoyed introducing friends to the hobby as well. As with all things in life, Arlene always tried to find the positive, including when she received her most recent diagnosis and how she approached her treatment. Arlene had a quiet strength about her, right up until the end. Arlene will be dearly missed and remem- bered fondly by her loving husband George, daughter Michelle (Brad), and many friends and family. The family wishes to thank Dr Patodia, Dr Kaizer and nurse Janet at the CVH oncology unit as well as the Palliative Care Team at OTMH for providing excellent care for Arlene. Cremation has taken place and when weather permits there will be a private interment at Whispering Pines Cemetery in Temagami, ON where Arlene will be reunited with her dear sister Diane. Donations in Arlene's memory can be made at the Oakville Humane Society or The Terry Fox Foundation. DUNBAR, A. Carlyle Business journalist ¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯¯ On Saturday March 6, 2021. Husband of Phyllis (née Gunning), father of Iain (daughter-in-law Mary Fenn- Dunbar), Burlington, Ontario; Gavin, Savannah, Georgia; and Carolyn (son-in-law David Dell), Oakville, Ontario; grand- father of Molly Dunbar, Madeleine Dell, Martha Dunbar, Andrew Dell, Thomas Dell and Iain Dell; brother of Diane Henning, Toronto; and Sylvia Dunbar (brother-in-law Gabor Takach). Predeceased by brother Robin, and brother- in-law James Henning. Eldest child of W. Roy and Molly (née Gordon) Dunbar. Born in 1930 and grew up in Timmins, Ontario, where he started a career in journalism as re- porter with local newspapers. In Toronto, he was an assistant editor of New Liberty mag- azine, assistant financial editor of the Toronto Star, and for 30 years held senior editorial positions at the Financial Post; and subsequently freelanced for Investor's Digest of Ca- nada, Investment Executive, and the Globe and Mail Report on Business. Honorary dir- ector and former director, Empire Club of Canada. Elder, Presbyterian Church in Canada. A life-long practi- tioner of the journalistic craft, Carlyle had a deep love of journalism and spent most of his life surrounded by piles of newspapers and periodicals. He had a capacious memory for an amazingly eclectic range of information on all manner of topics acquired from wide reading; and he had an old journalist's knack for striking up conversations with strangers encountered in the course of daily errands, which he would then report with evident pleasure. A life-long reader of Scripture, he was baptized late in life by his second son, who is an Anglican priest, and became an active member and elder at Knox Presbyterian church. A committed husband and father, he took delight in the doings of his children and grandchildren. After making a full recovery from a Christmas Eve heart-attack four years ago, he was blessed with an Indian summer to his life, and was planning a return to free- lance journalism, when he died in his sleep next to his devoted wife of 63 years. A private funeral service will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, Oakville. Burial will take place at a future date in Ethel, Ontario. Memorial do- nations may be made to Knox Presbyterian Church, 89 Dunn Street, Oakville, Ontario.
