In a press release issued Wednesday, Feb. 24, Triantafilopoulos, who is also the parliamentary assistant to the minister of long-term care, said enrolment in the pro- gram is expected to begin in March and the courses in April. The new jobs, she said, will start in Octo- ber and all 24 of Ontario's publicly funded community colleges will offer this pro- gram. Students will complete three months of coursework, gain direct experience in a clinical setting and then complete three months of paid on-site training in a long- term-care home or community care. Triantafilopoulos said the accelerated PSW training program will be a tuition- free opportunity for 6,000 new students and is expected to take only six months to com- plete, rather than the typical eight months. The Oakville North-Burlington MPP went on to note that nearly 2,200 students will be eligible to receive a $2,000 tuition grant to help them complete their studies, and grant funding to complete the clinical placement component of their training. "For long-term care, more PSWs will mean improved direct care and enhanced quality of life for vulnerable residents. Long-term care has been neglected for de- cades by previous governments and our government is taking action to attract and retain more PSWs. Over the next four years, we will train and hire up to 27,000 PSWs and nurses," said Triantafilopoulos. "Today's announcement is the founda- tion for our commitment to properly staff and provide care for our loved ones. I en- courage anyone interested in this caring and compassionate career to consider be- coming a PSW." Oakville North-Burlington MPP Effie Triantafilopoulos.
