In recognition of Internation- al Women's Day, Oakville MP An- ita Anand took to the virtual stage to speak candidly about ev- erything from motherhood to be- ing a racialized woman in govern- ment. The local member of Parlia- ment, who's also Canada's public services and procurement minis- ter, was the guest of honour at the third annual Women Who Inspire event on March 11, hosted via Zoom by Oakville Coun. Pavan Parmar and Mayor Rob Burton. Here are five quotes that cap- ture thoughts Anand shared throughout the evening: 1. On challenges faced as a racialized person in politics: "When I was first thinking about running, many people raised the possibility that I wouldn't get elected in Oakville because I'm racialized. That did cause me to pause and think about whether I wanted to run in Oakville. But I wanted to believe in the goodness of our community, as well as my legitimacy as a candidate, so I thought to myself, 'I'll give it a shot and see if this community has faith in me to represent them'." 2. On being a working moth- er: "It is a juggling act to some ex- tent when you're working full time and you have children. When I first started teaching as a professor, I had four kids under the age of five. It was a challenge, that is for sure. But I always had my mother in the back of my mind. She always pushed me to not just have kids but keep my profession going. There were times, and I'm sure all working women feel this, when I just thought, 'I can't do this anymore; I've got to stay home' because you want to be everywhere, but really you just can't. I definitely had those moments, but I'm really glad that I stuck it out because I was able to keep doing things I love." 3. On the impact of the pan- demic: "We know that women have borne the brunt of this pan- demic. Mothers, women in low- income jobs, essential workers and front-line health-care work- ers have experienced more stress, more burden, more onus of carrying this pandemic, and many of them have been unable to return to work. They've lost their hard-won gains that women as a whole have made up over the past decades. Many women, my- self included, are referring to the current economic situation as a 'she'cession, not just a recession." 4. On how the government plans to help women: "We, as a government, have committed to working together to ensure wom- en aren't left behind during and after this pandemic. In the fall economic statement, the govern- ment of Canada reiterated its commitment to ensure an inclu- sive, feminist recovery. We have formed a task force on women in the economy to harness ideas from a diverse group of experts on the best steps forward to en- sure women are not left behind." 5. On diversity: "We need more women in politics, and we need more racialized women and BIPOC women in politics as well. We are a very broad Canadian so- ciety, and we need our institu- tions to reflect the diversity of our society." 5 QUOTES THAT CAPTURE THE WOMEN WHO INSPIRE EVENT As part of International Women's Day, Oakville MP Anita Anand shared her thoughts on a number of subjects during a Women Who Inspire event.
