Starting this month the town, in partnership with the Silver Salmon Commu- nity (SSC), will install two Seabin waste collectors at the Bronte Outer Harbour. A Seabin is described as a water garbage bin. Water is sucked in from the surface and passed through a catch bag inside the Seabin, with a sub- mersible water pump. The water is then pumped back into the ma- rina leaving litter and de- bris trapped in the catch bag. The Seabin can report- edly collect litter ranging from larger plastics to mi- croplastics, such as ciga- rette butts and disposable cups, and hydrocarbons such as fuel and oil. Town staff said the de- vice will not pose any dan- ger to marine life such as fish. The devices are sched- uled to remain in the har- bour until October. "The town is thrilled to participate in the innova- tive Seabin Project with Anglers Taking Action and contribute to a sustainable waterfront community," said Oakville Mayor Rob Burton. "The town is committed to protecting and preserv- ing our waterways and nat- ural spaces, and this device will allow us to remove lit- ter and help educate the next generation for a clean- er and smarter future while helping make a more livable Oakville." Town staff said the SSC will install and manage op- erations surrounding the campaign and Seabin de- vices in Bronte Outer Har- bour, while town staff will be responsible for the daily emptying of the Seabins. The contents will be weighed, photographed, uploaded to the University of Toronto's Data Trapper Application and analyzed as part of the Great Lakes Plastic Cleanup project. "This pilot project will be a great opportunity to raise awareness and edu- cate the public on prevent- ing lake and ocean pollu- tion," said Chris Mark, di- rector of Parks and Open Space. "The town will be re- viewing the effectiveness of this project, and we hope to implement more Sea- bins in the coming years at both harbours, and on a more permanent basis." The Silver Salmon Com- munity is a not-for-profit organization made up of fishing industry stakehold- ers. For more information about Seabins, visit https://seabinpro- ject.com.
