The Town of Oakville recently an- nounced that the two buildings had achieved a gold rating under the Rick Han- sen Foundation Accessibility Certification (RHFAC) program. Town staff said Town Hall and the Oak- ville Trafalgar Community Centre are among only 56 buildings to receive this gold certification in Canada. "Our ongoing commitment to inclusiv- ity is one of the many reasons Oakville is Canada's most livable town," said Mayor Rob Burton. "The town is honoured to receive this recognition from the Rick Hansen Founda- tion, and we will continue to champion in- clusion by providing accessible and equi- table programs, services and facilities for residents and employees of all abilities." The RHFAC evaluates the level of mean- ingful access at buildings and sites, and recognizes an organization's commitment to accessibility. A rating system is used to evaluate the accessibility of a site and certify it at one of two levels -- RHF Accessibility Certified or RHF Accessibility Certified Gold. A gold certification is the highest achievement. Town staff said Town Hall received a rating score of 81 out of 100, and Oakville Trafalgar Community Centre received a rating score of 88 out of 100. Oakville Town Hall was built in 1965 and has undergone several interior reno- vations since then, with the most recent renovation to council chambers taking place in 2019. Town staff say this building has been lauded as accessible to staff and the public with paths that provide direct and easy ac- cess to entrances. They said each department within Town Hall has a reception desk and the building features universal washrooms, wayfinding and adequate clear space for people to move and access services and fa- cilities. Town staff noted Oakville Trafalgar Community Centre opened to the commu- nity in Oct. 2020, and was designed to pro- mote and allow for connectivity through- out the site. They said the centre's exterior path and entrances, wayfinding and universal pool change rooms, accessible washrooms, therapeutic pool, accessible fitness equip- ment and outdoor rehabilitation equip- ment were highlighted as the key areas of success. The facility is only one of two communi- ty centres in Ontario to receive a gold rat- ing. NEWS TOWN FACILITIES RECOGNIZED FOR ACCESSIBILITY "The town is honoured to receive this recognition from the Rick Hansen Foundation, and we will continue to champion inclusion by providing accessible and equitable programs, services and facilities for residents and employees of all abilities." - Mayor Rob Burton
