Halton police issued almost 2,000 tick- ets over 12 days as a part of Project Safe Start. A total of 1,933 tickets were handed out, as well as 822 warnings, during the annual project, which aims to raise awareness of traffic laws by targeting enforcement in ar- eas around schools as children return to school. Speeding was by far the most common offence, with 941 tickets and warnings is- sued. There were an additional 156 tickets and warnings for speeding in a community safety zone. Failure to stop at a stop sign resulted in 583 tickets and warnings. "The start of the school year is the per- fect time to remind drivers of the impor- tance of abiding by the rules of the road, as pedestrian and vehicle traffic increases significantly,"said Sergeant William Clay- ton of the Traffic Services Unit. "It is through education and enforcement that we work towards ensuring the safety of those on or near our roadways." Project Safe Start is in its 14th year as is a reminder for drivers follow speed limits, remain alert for pedestrians and cyclists.
