As a bicycling enthusi- ast, I use Lakeshore Road regularly as part of several different routes around town for pleasure or exer- cise. I will note that I have not had an unpleasant inter- action with a driver or expe- rienced anything scarier than making a left turn from a side street onto thatfrom a side street onto thatf road during rush hour. I've noticed other single riders behave well and 'stay in their lane,' mean- ing hard up against the right curb. Are there the occasional bumps or small obstacles? Sure, but nothing that can- not be managed by some- one paying attention with a modicum of skill. The main problems seem to occur when there is a pack of three or more riders, often abreast, taking up an entire lane that is intended for vehicular traffic.for vehicular traffic.f Look folks, you're not training for an Olympic medal or trying for a world record. For whatever rea- son, you're riding a bike on a street that is purpose-built to move traffic of all types. That means, keeping your head up for problems and following simple rules, like the one that says, ride single file. If you insist on riding in a 'peloton' then don't be a fool about it; stay in your lane and let others use the road too. Remember, many of us also drive cars or trucks. Do we enjoy getting stuck behind such a crowd? No. So don't do your best to an- tagonize drivers. Learn to ride responsi- bly and just maybe to enjoy solitude a bit more. Mob be- haviour is rarely a positive thing. BRIAN STERLING, OAKVILLE HELPING OTHERS IN CRAIG'S MEMORY Our son Craig, a gradu- ate of White Oaks Second- ary School, was in his fourth year at the Universi- ty of Western Ontario when he passed away from sui- cide in 2015. Craig was a wonderfully extroverted person who used his positive personal- ity and conviction to help his friends in many ways. Upon Craig's passing, we established the Craig Sandre Sophs Support Foundation at Western to support the offering of mental health and wellness counselling services. Over $75,000 has been raised to date, allowing for programs to be delivered to over 800 students each year. In 2016, the Ride for Craig was established by Craig's network of friends to gather and reminisce in friendship over past expe- riences and future activi- ties in life. The ride has morphed into a full-day, ap- proximately 100-kilometre bike ride, culminating in a friendly (and now, appro- priately safe) family and friend get-together at the end of the day. We'd like to pass on our thanks to all cyclists, par- ticipants and helpers from the sixth annual Ride for Craig held on Sept. 11. A special thanks is of- fered to Piper Foods and, in particular, the staff at the McDonald's at Third Line and Upper Middle, for their support. We miss Craig dearly and find some comfort in knowing that his founda- tion is able to help people deal with mental health is- sues in any manner.
