There has been an in- toxicatingly sweet aroma emanating from the Trafal- gar Terrace building at 300 Lakeshore Rd. E as of late. Following the smell of incense will lead one to its source, a new shop that has taken up residence in Oak- ville's downtown. ShineWaves Spirituali- ty opened recently and the owner's stated goal is to help the community to get in touch with their higher selves and to just relax. "The reason why we wanted to open up this kind of space was to give people a chance to explore that side of themselves," said shop founder Courtney Hayman. "To understand and de-stress. Because we live in such a busy hustle and bustle lifestyle." She and husband Ste- phen Hayman come from diverse backgrounds. Courtney is of Métis, French and Ojibwe descent and hails from Prince Ed- ward County. Stephen is from Dungannon in North- ern Ireland and moved to Canada eight years ago. "So my grandmother used to always push us to make sure we learned our culture and make sure that we push it and show every- one," Courtney Hayman said. "I grew up in the time of The Troubles. So reli- gious diversification and religious labelling was a huge thing," said Stephen Hayman. The Troubles was a 30- year-long conflict in North- ern Ireland that was often fought along Catholic- Protestant divides. "To come to a country that is so culturally accept- ing and religiously accept- ing, it took me a consider- able amount of time just to get it into my head that I could openly talk about spirituality," he added. The pair offer a wide va- riety of products that help one get in touch with their spirits. These can come from a range of cultures like Indigenous cultures, Hinduism and Buddhism. Products include dream catchers, incense sticks, crystals and salt lamps, just to name a few. Keep an eye out for workshops as well. Their most prominent space is their COVID-19 re- striction compliant guided meditation space. Behind their retail space is an open, indoor space where people can sit and purge their minds of extraneous thoughts. The guided meditations take place at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesdays after the shop has closed. There is a $15 drop-in fee, but the Haymans are working on a monthly fee structure they hope to have in place by the end of Octo- ber. The shop is also a thera- peutic space offering 22 dif- ferent "modalities." Ionic displacement, sound ther- apy, zero point energy ther- apy, resonance therapy are just to name a few. The plan is to also offer massage therapy once the necessary qualifications are met. HELPING OAKVILLE RELAX Courtney and Stephen Hayman show off their guided meditation space.
