While the sight of economies reopening and daily life adapting to a "new normal" is certainly promising, putting an open sign in their front window is just the first piece of the puzzle for many business owners. With holiday shopping season now in full swing, supporting local is more important than ever so that business owners can also ring in the new year on a high note. The latest data from the Canadian Federationof IndependentBusiness (CFIB)'s Small Business Recovery Dashboard shows that more than 60 per cent of businesses are not making normal sales, despite more than two-thirds being fully open. Such a slow pick-up in sales was not the big reopening splash that small businesses were hoping to make, especially when their average COVID-related debt stands at $170,000. Many small businesses rely on their sales around this time of year to make it through the remaining 10 months but are now fighting to just be seen against the online giants and big-box stores of the world. Canadians can commit to think and try local first before exploring other options this holiday season and make a world of a difference for businesses who already give so much to their communities. Contest celebrates small business To get Canadians excited to celebrate Small Business Saturday on November 27, CFIB has launched a contest for the holiday season. Consumers, as well as business owners and staff, can visit SmallBusinessEveryDay.ca to enter for a chance to win one of 10 cash prizes of $2,000, plus bonus eBay gift cards until November 28. Small Business Saturday, brought to you by CFIB and American Express and supported by eBay Canada, is a well-timed reminder between Black Friday and Cyber Monday that supporting big-box stores and online giants is not the only option for consumers doing their holiday shopping. In addition to the contest, CFIB has created a fun colouring sheet that cel- ebrates the joy small businesses bring to their communities during the holidays and the deep appreciation small businesses have for the support Canadians have given them throughout the pandemic. This nos- talgic colouring sheet creates a holiday tradition that brings families and friends together. Together, small businesses, their employees, and their customers can make these holidays a special time. - Article provided by CFIB Seetoday'snewspaper for thecolouringsheet Celebrate smallbusiness resiliencythis holidayseason
