Residents, businesses, community groups and charities came together to celebrate #GivingTuesday, a once a year charity event held on the first Tuesday af- ter Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Over 70 Halton organiza- tions took part in Giving- Tuesday, which was held on Nov. 30 this year. "The pandemic has dras- tically increased the de- mand for support programs and services across Canada and here in Halton," said Kristen Curry, the chair of Halton Gives. "It has also in- creased the need for human connections, acts of kind- ness and positivity." Curry thanked everyone who was able to participate. Some highlights in this year's push include: • Two hundred families from Immigrant Services and Childcare Programs got $100 gift cards to use for a holiday meal and/or warm clothing. • Seven cribs were filled with items such as diapers, formula and cereal for fam- ilies in need. • $1,500 was raised in gro- cery gift cards, as well two boxes full of food items, with help from the Oakville Rangers hockey team, Two Sevens Capital and Food4Kids. • Forty-seven hundred dollars raised to support students experiencing food insecurity. • Over $7,500 was raised for clients and families. #GivingTuesday is a global movement of giving led by non-profits, corpora- tions and donors. In 2020, the movement generated roughly $6.4 million. A Ven- ezuelan organization topped out the list of donors with the most donated, about $125,000, that same year. The Oakville Rangers hockey team was among the many contributors to #GivingTuesday.
