Citing "signs of improvement," Premier Doug Ford said on Jan. 20 that "the mea- sures we put in place to blunt transmission of Omicron are working." "We can be confident that the worst is behind us, and that we are now in a posi- tion to cautiously and gradually ease pub- lic health measures," he said. Starting Jan. 31, restaurants will be al- lowed to reopen for dine-in. The new mea- sures also include increasing social gath- ering limits to 10 people indoors and 25 peo- ple outdoors, increasing capacity limits of gyms, cinemas, museums, and casinos at 50 per cent in indoor public settings. As for COVID-19 hospitalizations, there were 129 people being treated in Halton hospitals as of Friday (Jan. 21), with 21 in intensive care -- compared to 106 and 14, respectively, from the previous week. The week also saw 13 more people die from COVID-19 -- five in Burlington, three in Oakville, three in Milton, and two in Halton Hills. A total of 276 people in Halton have lost their lives due to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. - With file from Louie Rosella Here's a weekly look at COVID cases and news.
