THE OAKVILLE-TRAFALGAR J OURNAL Back To Port BY ETHEL WILLIS HEWITT The story thus far: Elsa Swan, on her way to Cris Valentine in Paris, meets Joe Sterling, a pro- fessional transatlantic gambler and a friend of Cris. From Sterl- ing she learns that Cris doesn't intend to marry her, as she had thought. She is jobless and pen- niless, and is even' now spending Cris' money. She has met Nick Hudson, young Texan on his way to Paris to study art, and they have fallen in love, But Elsa is afraid that Nick's affection for her is a passing thing, and she pretends to flirt with Sterling. In revenge, Nick drinks too much, and courts the favor of Sylvia Breen. The ship is listing badly. CHAPTER VIIT "Don't say you've forgotten Sylvia Breen," she smiled archly. So--that was it, Nick thought. First they find our your name-- or part of it, that might be easy; then very subtly they let you know theirs and--there you are. Not being altogether dumb, he smiled down at her, SSylvia! Why of course, stupid of me!" He paused, face softening. "To tell the truth, youre a thousand times lovelier than the last time I saw you. No wonder for a moment I was all at sea. Shall we find a table?" he asked gallantly. ° He had carried that off pretty well--like an old timer, he could see by her eyes. "Do," she said agreeably. how his way of paying compliments," she smiled up at him as he held her cha Over his drink, which made Nick feel warm and very alive, he kept his eyes on her, "You bad boy, why didn't you write as you promised to?" she asked plaintively. "Write--oh it wasn't that I didnt want to, that I wasn't thinking of you. The fact that those first three letters were re- urned unopened sort of cooled my ardor, led me to believe that you -- wll, wanted to cut it there" His gaze wasn't quite Steady, ow- ing to too much champagne, but it didn't dodge hers. Her eyes widened in admira- tion. Nick grinned, She knew a sportsman when she saw one. Gosh, this was a great little game. Sort of matching of wits. Tt took one's mind off--off, well, things that hurt. Think of the dried, old-fashioned way he had met Elsa, been properly introduced and all that! No kick to that. Now this--this Was Sport, Sylvia was looking at him through a haze of blue smoke. "Darling," she said drolly, "you don't mean you: really did write and something stupid hap- pened to your letters, and you thought I didn't care? How could you, Nicky?" There was a deep note in her voice, and for a fraction of a second her gaze was lost in his, He felt a "I see you have the same nice little tightening at his throat. He a; Nick laid his hand over hers didn't know what he was letting himself in for--but what did it matter? "You don't mean that you do care--that you could care?" he asked, seeing her unsteadily through the haze, her flame-col- ored dress hanging low from nar- row shoulder straps, her cool, bare arms and shoulders ivory against the red of frock. He wanted, suddenly, to touch her. He pulled himself up sharp- ly, He was growing up too fast. "Want to dance?" he asked, "Love to," she said simply. For some time they danced in silence, Nick's masculine hands conscious of the woman beneath the flame-colored frock, She danced with smooth, even mas- tery, even the most intricate steps. "You dance as well as ever," she remarked, looking up at him. Nick looked at her, /felt uncer- tain about her, about himself, about-- His arms tightened, there was a little break in the smooth rhythm of their dancing. «And you fit here more per- fectly than I ever though anyone could. You--'" he stopped stag- gered by his boldness. "Yes," she prompted softly. Nick flushed. "Is there any more to say?" he asked, his cheek against her hair: The music came to an end in a little swirl. - Without a sugges- tion from either they wandered out, into the now deserted en- closure of the promenade deck. She ran her hand - through his rm. "Nicky." "Yes 2" "T had no idea you could play up like that," she said softly. Nick glanced down at her. "Why?" he asked tensely. Sylvia shrugged. "Oh, I don't know, you're SO young. The steward had shook his head and assured him there was no danger of that--no danger at all, The Altivania was equal to many storms, much worse than this; but even Nick doubted it seriously, Anyway, he wasn't much bothered about the matter. He stood obliquely against the bar and pulled Sylvia into his arms. Youre the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen," he said gal- lantly if a bit unsteadily. "You're rather marvelous yourself," she laughed up at him. . 4Let's go where we can tell each other things," he muttered, kissing her squarely on her red upturned mouth. A dozen or so men and women gathered around the bar trying to drink the édge off their mervous- ness, laughed good-naturedly. Just then Joe Sterrling appear- ed in the door: He joined the crowd at the bar and worked his way around to Nick. | He still had Sylvia in his arms. «Hudson, aren't you a bit young to be staging this sort of thing?" he asked in a lowered tone, glanc- ing at the amused crowd. Nick turned on him in fury. "Look here, Sterling.
