Phone Clarkson 229-R after 6 p.m. 25.p-20 HELP WANTED 2 YOUNG MEN or school boys years before, A seine is a coarse het with weights on one side and floats on the other, 100 feet: long, 18 feet deep in the middle or belly; tapering to a rope at either end. To operate it one end is fasten- ed to shore and, with a rowboat, the net is set in an arc out into the river and back to shore about 50 feet away. The net is then dragged into shore, catching the fish enclosed by the arc. Suckers are ' fairly easy to catch this way but other fish, such as carp, are very adept at diving under or over the net and thus escaping. | Any game fish that are caught are returned to the water with a little discomfort to the fish as possible. The sucker run is fair with a catch of 150 to 200 per day. They are kept alive in a large wooden box immersed in the river. Some years dealers from Toronto come, and pick them up with tank-equip- ped trucks, but this year the fish are packed in boxes and shipped to Detroit. Our creek has so many old logs, there are only a few places where the net can be used and even then the net often gets ripped or be- comes fast on an immovable ob- ject; much to the consternation of Mike and Cliff. It is fascinating work, though, for each dip you expect to get 40 to 50 fish and usually get 20 to 30. Sometimes. you may only get two or three, PEOPLE and EVENTS During this fine spring weather when everyone is cleaning and burning up rubbish, the local fire department is kept quite busy. The miners are producing less coal per day than in former years and the demand for hard coal is steadily inereasing. This year, with both gas and fuel oil very scarce and often unobtainable, and so very expensive, many more thousands of Canadian families will depend upon American Anthracite. Our American Coal Suppliers: have warned us that only those dealers who accept all the hard coal they ean get this summer will be able to keep their * customers comfortably warm next winter.
