S. Cooper CHAPTER VI All diseases of the nervous system are readily amenable to suggestion, and as this class of disease is the most difficult to cure by medicine, hypnotism will indeed prove most valuable to those effected with them. Brief- ly, the ailments in which hypno- tism has proved most valuable are: Earache, toothache, head- ache, neuralgia, lumbago, sciatica, St. Vitus' dance, stammering, stuttering, mental trouble, insomnia, enuersis, and all bad habits, of whatever na- ture, are permanently cured when all other means fail. rheumatism, Is there any drug that will cure stammering or stuttering or men- tal trouble? I am afraid not. Take, for instance, stammering or stuttering which has become chronic upon the mind. The suf- ferer is conscious of the fact that he is going to stutter, and he does so by his own imagination, yet his mind controls his speech. But he cannot shake off that idea. This is where hypnotism plays a decisive part, it is the force that shapes the will. Stammering and stuttering may be cured more quickly by suggestion than in any other way. The subject is treated by suggestion, that i by making the idea of cure pene- trate the mind. We profit by the special condition of receptivity of the brain created by hypnosis, that is while the person is under the hypnotic influence. The brain And Don't Forget Records! He must not be awakened with a sudden start. Rather, he should be awakened just as if he was wak- ing out of a natural sleep. In the above you have made use of a suggestion which is to take effect after hypnosis, or in other words, a post-hypnotic suggestion. Of course, it is not necessary to put the patient in the hypnotic state to make cures; it is only in spe- cial cases or cases of long stand- ing, and when producing the hyp- notic condition with the view of curing disease, it is always best to keep the patient free from any- thing of an exciting nature as it would hinder the operators pur- pose. It is the plan always to be followed to give the patient a healthful and beneficial treatment so it will carry its message of healing and treatment to the pa- tient. It may seem strange that when a post-hypnotic suggestion is given to a subject while under the influence, he or she does not remember what has been said to them, but after they are awak- ened they carry out that sugges- tion, yet do not remember what suggestion was given them. A post-hypnotic suggestion will hold good to be carried out in a week You may rely From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on week days, and from 1:30 to 6 p.m. on Sundays, supervised recreation is provided Oakville chil- dren at the Lions club wading pool in Busby park. Gay Me- Dermott and Pat McLeary, in their smart uniforms, are on duty on alternate days, and eat their lunch at the pool to prevent the youngsters from straying toward the river or causing undue dis- turbance in the water. for "Each morning and afternoon we count the number of children in or around the pool" Pat ex- plained. "And on bright, sunny days as many as 100 youngsters up to 10 years old are tossing their balls and filling pails in the sand pile" Besides these toys, the Lions have provided a shelter containing hoses, disinfectants, a first aid kit, soap and towels. The supervisors hose and disin- fect the pool every day, leaving the water running during crowd- ed afternoons to ensure purity. "If we have trouble with children or equipment" Pat McLéary said, "we mention it in our daily report to the five-man committee of Lions responsible for the pool." just as soon as your patient does not remember what has been said to him during hypnosis. Then it is the time that a suggestion for a cure of chronic ailments and bad habits will be effective. Why doctors and nurses do not take up the study of hypnotism is be- yond me. Consider the good they could accomplish. They come in contact with more suffering hu- manity than anyone else, and 1 will say that if they put more of their study to hypnotism they would have less use for drugs. Because if they knew just what to do, and how to do it, just what to say and how to say it, they could relieve half the sufferers from aches and pains without having: to use drugs. We know that drugs have after effects. There are absolutely no after ef- fects where hypnotism is con- cerned. (To be continued) Bill MacRae, B. W.
