The first of the new 1948 coins to bear that date have now been seen in Oakville. I have at hand two new pennies which have been issued during the current year but as previously announced, the first series did mot have this year's date on them. Since the King is no longer Emperor of In- dia, the old inscription on the face of the Canadian coins is now erroneous. Canada alone of alld the Dominions refrained from putting the new date on this year's coins until a new die could be pre- pared. In the meantime the 1947 date was continued with the ad- dition of a secret mark consisting of a tiny Maple Leaf following the date, This has now been al- tered to read 1948. The face of the coin has been changed. Formerly it read "GEORGIVS VI D: G; REX ET IND: IMP." The new die used has been made to read "GEORGIVS VI DEI GRATIA REX". The long wait for the new coins was necessary as the face die is made in Eng- land, the obverse alone heing made In Canada, as exemplified by the different engravers initials on either side of the coin. Col- lectors will doubtless wish to secure some of each of these as they may undoubtedly be in de- mand-in years to come. Unfor- tunately there are not enough afternoons and evenings for all the Scouts, Cubs, Guides, Rangers and Brownies to hold all their meetings in the Scout hut.
