A wealth of junior material jumped through the dasher at Georgetown last Sunday after- noon for the season's initial prac- tice session. While naturally short on condition, Fred Turner's pro- teges are, for the most part, both burly and speedy, and an excel- lent squad should develop from the heavy group of candidates who sped through the hour-long drill. Practice periods for the Legion intermediate squad are to begin within the next fortnight, as Playing Coach Bert Peer is busy completing arrangements for reg- Kress waxed enthusiastic yester- day over the latest acquisitions of the club, Defenceman Spunk Walsh, of last year's juniors, and Forward Al McCleary. The latter, who held down a defence post with Grimsby Peach Kings last winter, is currently a battling member of Hamilton Wildcat grid forces, and Kress 15 handicapped this week in his juggling of cases by two sets of crossed fingers, as he worries about possible in- jury to McCleary. Much is also expected of Walsh, who should become an outstanding blueline belter under Peer's tutelage. Tickets for the Legion's hockey draw are selling well, it is repor- ted, but club officials are still able to supply any given demand for the ducats, which offer an opportunity to claim outstanding prizes. ular ice hours. The Sports Association crew gained the final bracket by. virtue of their victory over Rot- ary, while Whitaker's took the measure of Grammell's in the: othed semi-final round. Only other series yet'to be con- cluded is the minor peewee round robin playdown, which presently has Bud Corbett's squad setting a hot pace with three wins and one loss. Halton Hardware and Rotary share second place with two wins and as many losses, with Lions bringing up the rear with a single victory and three defeats. Competition in these minor playoffs has been of the eye- opener variety, and is well worth the interest of parents and friends of the youngsters. This figure, ob- tained irom the first "Special Surveys on Sales of Pest Control Products by Canadian Registrants," issued by. the Dominion Bureau of Statistics, is about one-half of one per cent. of the gross farm income of about two billion dollars for the same period. It appears that Canadian farmers spent relatively little in the control of pests which yearly consume and destroy an amount estimated at about 17 per cent. of the national farm income--$350 million worth of food and other farm produce. With modern pest control it is estimated that 80 per cent. of this loss could averted with a subsequent in- in output and efficiency of be crea production.
