Greetings from England: There seems a slight lull over Europe at the moment while the UN. has the delicate task of sorting things out. One thing Rus- sia is doing unconditionally is to supply comedians with endless material, like the radio wit the other night who explained to his friend that Russian rummy was the same as the English game only you didn't put your cards on the table. I would have thought Vishinsky would not have the time or inclination to listen to the BB.C. but the next day he de- clared in the headlines that was exactly what he would do, with one or two "if's", of course. The Peterborough Art Society, of which I am now a member, held it's annual exhibition last week. Peter Scott opened the show and it was very interesting to meet and talk with him. His beautiful paintings and books on wild bird life are known almost as well in Canada and the States we smallest PERMO-MAGNETIC RADIOEAR ever made is one-piece model 55 = LiGHT * NEAT * CONVENIENT * POWERFUL « Noisemaster--you hear comfortably in extremely noisy plices. a Phonemaster--use any telephone, anywhere--with ease. By Audrey Watts McNaughton as they are here and his frequent talks over the B.B.C. are very po- pular. His paintings are remark- able not only for their perfection of technical detail but for the at- mosphere of freedom and space which has perfectly captured the natural setting of the birds. He lived for sometime in an old light- house near the marshes not far from here, from which vantage point he could study the comings and goings of ducks and geese which abound in that area. He has painted bird life around the world and is now planning an air- jaunt beyond the Arctic circle in Canada to try to track down the nestling haunts of a rare Snow Goose. He is a keen sailor, having re- presented Britain in single sailing at the Olympics and during the war carried on his family's naval boat, for which exploits he was tradition by commanding an M.T. decorated. The hooks, 'Scott's Last Expedition', about his fath- er's remarkable but tragic An- arctic exploration, have been in the family library for as long as I can remember and I still re- call the impression made on my mind when I first read the brave pages of Captain Scott's. diary. Some weeks ago we unofficially joined the country-wide army of bicyclists. Everyone cycles here, from tiny babies in baskets to el- derly ladies whom one would think would hestiate to leave their firesides. I have enjoyed every mile of our weekend excursions. The weather has been wonderful and we usually pack a lunch and head for some historic site within range and the accessibility of such places is one of the charms of England, The country doesn't whizz past in a blurr, in fact far from it! On one of our early jaunts three sturdy youths wear- ing the triangular badge on their khaki shorts, asked us the way to the next hostel. As we push- ed on we beamed happily at each other. They had implied we were their equals, we had arrived! Shine up your bikes and join us next week on a short trip to Fotheronghay, where Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned and executed. On this cheerful note I'll leave you. Optometrist 173 Colborne Street . 9.30 to 5.00 . 9.30 to 12.00 Daily Sat. Unexpected Delay Scene for "The Fountainhead" at Warner Bros! the other day, was to show lovely Patricia Neal crossing a street towards the church in which she was to be married. But she didn't get there because the horse of a traffic policeman in the sequence, snatched and ate her bridal bou- quet of lillies-of-the-valley! Icy Midst That heavy mist you see in motion picture dream sequences is made of dry ice, vaporized by steam, More than 10,00 pounds of the stuff was used to cloud up lovely Doris Day's nightmare singing scene in Warner Bros. "Two Guys and a Gal', Title of the ditty she warbles is "There's Nothin' Rougher than Love". Thwarted Ralph Blane, the famous com- poser who wrote most of the tuneful ditties in Warner Bros. technical musical, "One Sunday Afternoon" was supposed to turn out one romantic tune based on the Mexican-Indian word for kissing. But the whole project had to be given up because no- body could find anything to rhyme with it. The word is "ten- tenamiquilizti"! ; Canine Note Joan Crawford's very fancy French poodle, known as Cliquot, and whose pedigree stretches from hither to yonder, is to make its' screen debut opposite none other than Miss Crawford her- self in "Flamingo Road", current Michaeil Curtiz production for Warner release. Dresses More People! Few people have dressed more people for motion pictures than Milo Anderson whose contract than sensationally appropriate! While she warbles she's sur- rounded by apache (The Parisian kind) boys and girls, who then proceed to pitch woo, and to show great affection by breaking bot- ties, chairs, tables, barrels and as- sorted bric-abrac over one an- other's heads! So far, with two 'takes' filmed and three to go, there have been no broken bones, and the fury of the romantic battle royal is best evidenced by the fact that it takes a squad of janitors more than an hour to clean up the set beween 'takes'. Besides Miss Day, Carson and Morgan, the sequence features the famous Mazzone Abbott dancing troupe, and it will be program- med as a 'musical number' for one reason only. There just doesn't seem to be another word for it. The Irony of It Edmond O'Brien's recent mar- riage to lovely Olga San Juan took place on a Sunday evening. At 9 o'clock the following' a.m. he was making love scenes with Viveca Lindfors for Warner Bros. mystery-drama, "Somewhere in the City". Fortunately his bride was not a spectator. She had to report to another studio for ward- robe fittings.
