Onion sets are" the small dry bulbs of onions which were grown last year. They can be purchased by the pint or quart at most seed stores, One quart of onion sets will plant a 100- foot row. White, red and yellow var- ieties of onions can be obtained in onion sets. The white var- ieties, however, are the most popular. Plant onion sets one inch deep and three inches apart in the row as illustrated in the accompanying ~~ Garden-G raph. The bulbs will start growth al- most immediately and will be of edible size within a few weeks. In many gardens onions grown from sets are the first return from the garden, It is not wise to plant too many onion sets at one time, since successive plantings can continue as late into the summer as the sets remain in good con- dition. NEW DAMPING METHODS NOW AID SEEDING Some garden lovers have quit starting plants inside and many others are sadly disappointed when seedlings of flowers and certain vegetables fall over, rot off at the ground level and die. This disease caused by fungi pre- sent in most soils, known as damping-off, can be prevented without resorting to soil sterili- zation that is almost impossible for the home garden. Since 1045 damping-off of seedlings has been eliminated at the Dominion Experimental Sta- tion, Scott, Sask. says G. D. Matthews, by using acid peat spaghnum moss usually avall- able from the nearest sced house. First the moss is broken down on a wire screen to leave the strands about a quarter inch long. Moss can be used to fill the flat or shallow box. If the sup- ply is limited, a layer an inch thick cin be spread over a sandy soll mixture so that the top of the flat is filled with moist moss. The surface ls pressed down to half an inch below the rim, and an additional thin layer of shred- ded moss about one-eighth of an inch thick is applied and sprink- led lightly. Seed Is sown by sprinkling on this layer either broadcast or in rows if desired. If several kinds of seed are sown in the same flat divisions are made with a thin line of dry sand because wooden strips would disturb the moss. Usually the sced is not covered but a light sprinkling of fine moss may be used on large seeds. The seed fs given a very light sprinkling, preferably with an atomizer, covered with a pane of gla is better to have tho glass wost on an inch-high wooden frame, Placing theso flats in a strong sunlight 1s to bo avoided. When germination appears to be finished the glass and frame are removed and regular water- ing is started. Another advan- tage becomes apparent because overwatering Is not a problem with the porous moss. It will be found that the seedlings are readily transplanted from the moss. UK AT THE CAR!
