Knarf was carrying on top of his head a book, a matchbox, a pair of stockings, a bar of chocolate, 4 bottle of milk, a muskmelon and a large twig on which stood a live sparrow. This was amazing. sight. Hanid ran right out to see why her brother, who usually would not carry anything, was now carrying all these tliings on top of his head. As She Ran "Knart!" she called out as she ran up to him. "Why are you carrying all these things? They fall off! "Oh Ho they won't" said Knarf. "Pm being very careful" "But why are you doing it? Why don't you carry these things in your hand?' | Knarf said he saw a picture in a book of a lady who was carry- ing a big bundle of clothes on her head. "If she can do it, I can do it. Besides," he added, "when I walk I like to swing my arms. If my arms dre full of things bow can I swing them? That's why I'm carrying _ them on my head--to be able to swing my arms." "That's a silly reason," said] Hanid. "Nobody carries so many things on their head." "You do," said Knarf, smiling. Hanid looked astonished. Hy do? Butbut I'm not carrying any- thing on my head!" "Yes you are--thousands of things," said Knarf. Hanid quickly felt the top of her head to be sure that she was Knarf looked very odd right. "I'm not carrying any- thing at all!" "Yowre carrying thousands and thousands of hairs," said Knarf. "Youre carrying more things on top of your head than I am!" With that Knarf began laughing so loudly that he start ed shaking. That wasn't any good for the things on his head. Suddenly they all came tumbling down. "But I'm right just the same," he repeated to his sister. Very' Good Idea Later Knarf and Hanid saw their friend Mr. Punch. "Carry- ing things on your head? Very good idea,' he agreed. "But it's not easy. That picture you saw of the lady carrying clothes--or rather a basket of wash--on her head is exactly right. But it's not very easy to do. It takes a long time to learn how to walk with anything on your head. In fact," Mr. Punch said 'with a COMMUNITY FLOOR SERVICE Floor Sanding & Refinishing For Free Estimates Very Foolish chuckle, "it's mot easy even to carry your head." This sounded suprising, and Knarf asked Mr. Punch to ex- plain what he meant. "Well, look at the animals. "Very few of them are able to carry their heads-- carry them upright, as we do. The lion, the tiger, the fox, the wolf, the bear' all stand on four legs and. carry their heads down. The giraffe holds ' his head up, and so does. the kangaroo. The birds do, too. But no one carries his head as high and straight as people. It's a good thing, too. Yes, you should always carry your head up high--and walk straight--and look up at-the sky instead of down at the ground." Ethopia Adventure (Continued from Page 1) mathematics and Bnglish. His contract is of three years' dur- ation, and may be renewed at the end of that time. It is possible that Mrs. MacDougall may also teach, as there is plenty of de mand for teachers at the School. The pupils are all natives. "We are looking forward to the experience," the former Lin- brook teacher informed the Jour- nal in the course of a telephone conversation. "The school is in the mountains, at an altitude of 8,000 feet. The minimum tem- perature is 42 degrees and the maximum 79. It never freezes and it's never terribly hot. There is a rainy season from the mid- dle of June to the end of Sept- ember. The school is ten degrees north of the equator." Mr. and Mrs. MacDougall are not worried about the effect of the new surroundings on their children, David, = aged two, and Richard, aged 6 months. Attach- ed to the school is an excellent hospital, staffed by Swiss person- nel. But the travellers are going well prepared for their stay. They have shipped a crate con- taining bed-springs, mattresses; wire screening, tinned goods and dishes, clothing and shoes. All clothing, Mrs. MacDougall ex- plained, must be imported into Ethiopia. One evening recently Mr. and Mrs. MacDougall were given a farewell party at the home of the latter's parents, Mr. and' Mrs. Percy Merry, when some 25 members of their families gath- ered to wish them success in their enterprise.
