The article "Operation Cattle Lift" by Frank J. Taylor, condensed from Skyways, stress- es the full participation of Hal- ton and Peel breeders in the plan. The successful transportation of $450,000 worth of animals to Colombia by air-freight-as part of that Government's livestock betterment program, Is being watched with great interest by North and South Americans alike. The operation calls for 35 flights to handle 3,000 animals and 4,000 chickens and turkeys during 1950. The CH54's carry 17,000 pounds each trip, and to date only one animal has been lost. Farm- ers deliver livestock and follow at embarkation airports for early morning loading, enabling the plane to reach Miami before dark. Flights out of Miami are night, timed to arrive by early morning in Colombia to avoid afternoon thunderheads. From east and midwest United States, the operation provides 24- hour delivery, from the Pacific coast, 36 hour delivery. The Col- ombian Farm Loan Bank which purchased the animals offers them to Colombia farmers almost at cost, the money going back into a revolving fund to buy more livestock. The Hays brothers of Calgary who breed and sell cattle in Al- berta and Ontario, deliver dairy stock to Bermuda, Mexico, Cuba. and South America. In addition to this many prdivate breeders are using air deliveries as a regular thing. Albert Stagg of Oakville, Ontario, another Holstein dealer started air deliveries to Italy two years ago. And purebred Jerseys from the Brampton, Ontario herd of B. H. Bull and Sons have been flown to Jamaica, Mexico and four South American countries.
