1950 - The hursday, October 19, 1950 OAKVILLE-TRAFALGAR JOURNAL i Knoy churg ninistey I, Padre Toront, ; = YOUR EARS SHOULD B BURNING People are saying mighty nice things about you and the other fine neighbors that make up this Oak- ville-Trafalgar, community of ours. : ".. . . Oakville-Trafalgar folks certainly believe in their future . . . most progressive community in Canada today faith in their young people . .. a wonderful half-million dollar hospital and now a rec- i reation centre with artificial ice arena and commun- i ity hall . . . ) 4 Our community has been making big-city head- line news for some time now, but it's no news to us. We know what a grand community we have in Oak- ville-Trafalgar, that's why we're here. That's why so many of us chose it in the first place. Oakville is more than just a place to live, it's practically a way to live. AY However, there has been one fault, the lack of facilities for winter recreation. There is 'plenty for both youngsters and grown-ups alike to do in the summer, but with winters getting milder all the time ii rece neEneE ea ee nen y RT A I IA I A 3 CE CCE JOE FSIS PIA el FEEDER EE EEE EI good ice can only be relied on for one or two weeks a year. Late last winter a group of public-spirited citiz- ens met to find a practical solution to this increasing- ly critical problem. Present facilities were very in- adequate. Yet the need increases almost weekly in pace with the rapid growth of this area. Decisive action had' to be taken. First came the ratepayers approval of a plebescite authorizing a municipal expenditure of $100,000 on the project, providing an equal amount was raised from other sources. Encouraged by this public approval, a fact finding committee was set up including executives of all local service organizations and officials of the Community Programs Branch of the Ontario Depart- ment of Education. A survey was then taken to as- certain the overall opinion of residents of the Oak- ville, Trafalgar, Bronte district, whether taxpayers or not. Headed by officials of the nationally-known research organization, Canadian Facts Limited, a scientific sampling of opinion was taken. It revealed an almost identical proportion ratio to that revealed by the vote in favor of this undertaking. But winter is almost upon us again. Plans were finalized. Firm bids from the contractors were in. But how can our youngsters be skating by Christmas? The Royal Bank agreed to provide the answer--by ad- vancing $100,000, so lowest costs could be assured. Security? Oakville's good name and the reputation of its citizens for supporting previous community endeavors. t Construction is rolling. Drop by Trafalgar Park and see for yourself. The roof trusses are scheduled for this week and there is every chance that our children will be skating by Christmas. How can you help? Well, a two-week campaign for funds gets under way on Monday November 6th. A committee of 250 of your friends and neighbors will canvass the community for pledges and cash to redeem the loan. Arrangements have been made with the Royal Bank to accept pledges for subscriptions spread over convenient monthly payments. Please be ready with your support when your canvasser calls! P.S. Watch for the big news to come! Keep this date open: SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4th., TIME 11 am.! OAKVILLE TRAFALGAR Community Genta Arena
