It all be- gan late at night in the dark house, after everyone else but Christopher was asleep. As every- one knew Chris was spending the cold winter months in a snug corner of the fireplace, in a tiny space between two loose bricks. "well," said Chris, "the Old Grandfather Clock had just chim- ed twelve, The fire was dying down. Father was still sitting in his chair, reading a book. I was beginning to think that perhaps I ought to taker my guitar and hum a bit of a song, just to cheer myself up. Then, all at once I '| heard a strange sound. It seemed to be coming from the attic." «what kind of a sound was it you heard, Christopher?" asked Hanid. Sound Waves "At first," continued Chris, "it reminded me of the sound of wa- ves. It was a sort of low and gen- tle slap-slap-slap, like little wav- os would make against the side of a ship. But the next moment I lieard even a stranger sound! "Very softly, and as though far away I heard the-sounds of a bell Fight times they sounded. I knew they didn't come from the clodk. I knew they didn't come from a church, No, they seemed to come Tight down, from the attic, Just like the sound of 'the waves did. And then, just ater the bell stop- per ringing, 1 heard a man's voice very harsh and gruff and muffled, as though he were calling out on a windy night from the deck of a ship: 'Eight bells! All's well!' "Oh, that's impossible!" Hanid exclaimed. "There's no ship up in the at tic!" said Knarf. "Yes, that's what I said: to my- self. But nevertheless I crept as quietly out of my place in the fire- place as I could, and started slow- ly up the dark stairs. I glanced around at Father. He seemed to have heard nothing. He sat read- ing his book without even look: ing up. "So up the stairs I went, past REPAIRS To all types of commercial and domestic refrigerators I 4 | Office Hours: | Monday and Thursday Contracting and electric ranges. 1 9.30 a.m. - 8.30 p.m. TREKS -- SHRUBS -- ROSES PARTS & SERVICE LAN i Saturday 9.00 a.m, - 12.30 pm. And finally there I was, right in the attic. Moment or Two "For a moment or two there was silence and I was wondering whether, after all, 1 hadn't im: agined everything. But then it began again. Only this time it wasn't the same as before. I heard the sound of the wind blowing, harder and harder. And the wav: es were crashing. And I could hear the masts of a great sailing ship creaking as it hent before the wind. Harder and still harder blew the wind! It was a storm on the sea! I was sure of it! And I heard the voice of the Captain shouting orders, and the sound of the sails being lowered, and the sound of the wheel spinning around as the ship turned, and the clanking of the anchor-chain, and the sound of the sailor's foot- Steps as they ran this way and that across the wooden deck. "But I couldn't see anything except a faint 'shadow across the attic ceiling where the moonlight came in faintly through the little dusty window. And the shadow bobbed up and down. "I stayed in the attic all night, as close to where the sounds came as 1 could get. And in the morning. No, I didn't find a ship. But I did find, right in front of me, half covered with books and papers, an old wooden chest. And when I crept under the cover of the chest and peered inside, I found an old compass, and an old sbrass ship's-bell, and an old shred of sail, and an old tattered log- book. And all these things had once belonged to Father's Grand- father who had been a Sea Cap- tain long, long ago!"
