Take your time and be sure the objest on which you set your eye and heart has good proportions and clean lines. If your collector's item is of pine or some other soft wood, it will be easier to saw or nail. The appearance of old dress- ers, chests, and desks can fre- quently be improved by replacing the old metal drawer pulls with more modern 'ones. Holes, cracks, and keyholes can be filled up with plastic wood. After your repairs and altera- tions 'are finished, you're ready to start to work on the finish. If the surface is smooth, just wash any dirt off with laundry soap and water. After the wood has dried thoroughly, sand the surface very lightly. If the old surface is in bad condition you will have to remove it completely with paint and varnish remover. This should be applied liberally with a small paint brush, working in one dir- ection and on a small part of the surface at a time. Scrape off the paint when it has softened with a broad putty knife, or broad kit- chen knife using papers to mop up the residue. Keep applying the remover until the bare wood is reached. As removers are often FROM YOUR COLOR COUNSELOR --RUTH D. RE-DO OLD FURNITURE FEVER the water stain may be applied, one ounce of powder making n quart of stain. Whatever type of redo you SUNLEY-- choose for your mew old piece of furniture, be warned that.much patience is required to achieve gz satisfactory result, and the short- cuts are few. However, resulting beautifully colored, smoothly sur- faced piece of wood will be suf- ficient reward for all your efforts, with the grain. Your final rubbing can be with steel wool. Dust thoroughly. If you wish a natural look for your "conversation piece," you can simply apply wax to this sur- face. Or for a: .soft or porous wood, the wax can be preceded by oil polishing. To obtain a suit able oil polish, mix a half pint of raw linseed oil with one table- spoon! of liquid drier. Rub it onto the surface sparingly with a clean cloth or your hands, and repeat about five times at weekly inter- vals. Obviously your piece of fur- niture will have to be tucked away in a corner where it won't be disturbed, if you intend to. re- do with this type of finish. If the oil you use is warm it will be ab- sorbed more readily by the wood. The rubbing should take from & to 20 minutes depending on the room condition. A very light rub- bing with steel wool between coats is a good idea and will keep down any grain that may raise. You will probably choose to use a water stain as this is the easiest for the amateur to handle. Also it is not expensive and does not fade. One problem is that in applying a water stain the grain in the wood is raised and the sanding of this makes for an ir regular appearance. To get around this, first apply warm water to the 'surface and when this had dried, any grain that has been raised can then be sanded. Then Join the HEALTH Parade! Where you have to remove paint from legs, arms, and orna- mental work, a toothbrush instead of the small paint brush is the best idea for applying remover. Some removers contain wax and this must be taken off by wiping with mineral spirits. Your next step will be sanding.
