The following mixture is suggest ed for washing. One quart hot water, three tablespoons boiled linseed oil, one tablespoon turpen- tine; kept warm in the top of a double boiler. The mixture should be applied with a clean soft cloth that isn't dripping wet, precau- tions being taken to keep the moisture away from the joints where the glue might get soften- ed, causing the joinis to part at a later date. Wipe the surface dry and rub to a polish with a dry soft cloth, preferably chamois. You should find that most piec- es will react satisfactorily to this simple treatment as the hot wa- ter and turpentine will remove grease, dirt, house dust, smoke, and steam that has collected over the winter; and the oil in the solution will polish the finish, re- moving most of the scratches and white spots. Where scratches still show af- ter the treatment described above, further steps will have to be taken. It is possible to cover up scratches in varnish on natural colored woods such as mahogany, walnut, and oak by cutting open an oily nut, such as pecan, black walnut, or brazil, and rubbing the scratch until it has darkened. There are also commercial scratch removers on the market to match the various colors of finish. A scratch remover can be pro- duced at home by mixing the cor- rect colordn-oil with varnish to match the color of the damaged wood, and adding a drop or two of Japan drier. Use a small point- ed brush to apply the mixture to the scratch, and smooth out the edges lightly with a finger. A sec- ond coat may be necessary. If you use the latter method yowll want to know what oil paints to buy from the local deal- er to match the wood in question. Walnut can be matched by choos- ing either burnt umber or van- dyke brown, with sometimes a touch of raw umber added. For brown oak, burnt umber with perhaps a little raw sienna added, is usually satisfactory. For a mar- red maple finish, burnt and raw sienna mixed will usually be right, with raw or burnt umber added to dull the finish. Brown mahogany can be repaired by mixing brown umber With a very small amount of turkey red. Alcohol, hot objects, or stand- ing water usually cause the. white spots on furniture and these will require special treatment if the original cleaning did not remove them, While there are 'commerci- ial products available for remov- ing such white spots, there are several home mixtures you can use as a thin paste, rubbing gent- ly over the faulty spot with a soft cloth or preferably, a finger. One such mixture is powdered pumice and oil; the latter can be linseed, olive, or lemon, with lin- seed recommended. Another home remedy is plain salt and oil (sal- Phone 850 Shop in person or by telephone, Number 850. of EATON MOVED TO A NEW ADDRESS EATON'S Onder Office 131 COLBORNE ST. get acquainted with our better-than-ever service. assoriments, the everyday values of EATON'S Catalogues or Toronto Stores' or let the Sh ing Service help you with your chases.
