Gum recession is when the gums move downward from where they would naturally be connected to the tooth structure. Gum tissue ‘should’ connect to the tooth surface at the interface of the root and crown of tooth. When it pulls down from this area, the soft root is exposed. Recession can sometimes be corrected by using a softer toothbrush or improving brushing technique. However, in many cases, recession can be caused by a combination of factors including malocclusion or poor bite that can result in trauma to teeth, mouth tissue and even jaw joint (TMJ). en teeth do not alignment or some teeth are 2 hinine harder together than others, gum recession can progress. The excess force of grinding and clenching can cause the gums recede. A night guard can help prevent jaw strain and excess forces to the teeth/gums. Just as bacteria can cause cavities and gum. infections, recession can also be bacterial- related. Bacterial plaque below the gum line can cause inflammation, infection and recession. When the gums recede due to bacteria, it is called periodontal disease. This is mainly prevented by regular dental cleanings. In some circumstances, gum recession may be due to a tight or low lying frenum attachment, A frenum is a small band of tissue lip or cheek tis When it connects very close to the gum ine, it can put stress on the gum and causes it to recede. This can be corrected with a painless laser treatment called a frenectomy. It is important to address gum recession and the exposure of roots that increases the risk of developing cavities, sensitivity and possible wearing away of the soft root surface. Exposed roots can be protected with white bonding/filling material, which can protect the root (cementum) surface from brushing, stimulus and may prevent decay from occurring on the surface. Exposed roots can also be covered with tissue grafting. This tissue may come from the patient’s mouth or from a surgical mesh made of other skin cells (Alloderm). Gum grafting offers full coverage of the root and enhances the appearance of teeth. Before any of these procedures are performed, it is essential that elimination of other factors as described above; malocclusion, grinding/ clenching and bacterial infection is taken into account. These factors need to be corrected prior to bonding or grafting so either treatment has a chance to succeed. At Bhandari Dental we offer gum grafting and other periodontal services. 2525 Old Bronte Rd. Ste. 470 Oakville €70z ‘Sz AeW ‘Aepsiny | seaveg el!Ayeo | ¢ woo'uo}}eyepisut
