He said he had a good opportunity of learn-- ing the general opinion of the pseople on the subject, from the fact that he kept a tavern ' and was well acquainted with every settlor in that part of the country. The belief was universal that one fourth the purchase money | would be expended in local improvements. -- Many of the settlers regarded $2 per acre as a very high price to pay for their land, but were satisfied when Mr McNabb made this explanation, _ | Vr H. Brown was next examined, and | said be had made large improvements in the township of Elderslie before the Act of 1853 was passed. It was urderstood when he paid for his lots in 1854, that one fourth of the money would be expended in local im-- provements, butit was not made a condition of| the saio. _ | Jamzs Ray, one of the early settlers of Elderslie, was next examined and tostificd to the same cffect. The Committee adjourned at 11.30 till to-- morrow.
