Council of Eigin, for cortain amendments $0 the Assessment Act, THE ADDRESS. Mr. FRASER thauked the House for their e@ourtesy in permitting the adjournment of t¥he dobate last night, and said that this afternoon he would be bricf in his remarks, He had yesterday showed conclusively the want otf honour in the members of the Opposition who were endeavouring to force the amendment io the amendment to the Address. 'Fhough moved by the member for South Simeoe, it was evidently the work of older heads, 'The amendmenat to the Addross was in the handwriting of the mem-- ber for Enst Grey, wao had had sufficient experience in the House to be familiar with the way in which any expression of opinion From either s1de of the House could be cut off,. The amendment to the amendmert was in a diifereut bhandwriting, whose it was ho wouid not menrtion then, It had Qriginally been inutended to be moved by the hou, member for Peterborough, but it had evidently been found necessary that sgomebody else should take that gentleman's place, 'That somebody eise was the mem-- ber for South Simecoe, who, if he (Mr, Fraser) had rightiy understood uim yestorday, bad said he made the motioun in fulliliment of a pledge given by him to his constituents, Me had read the address of the member for Bouth Simcoe when he 'wont before them for clection, and he had feound "no reference in it whatever to expenditures and salaries, or on account ot indemuitiea, e did find in it that the hon, gentleman promised, it he were elected, to endeavrour in this the last session ot this Parliament to emphasize the despurate: misgonduct of the Govern. ment of tho day, <(i¥ear, bear.) He (Mr, Fraser) thought that when the House had + finished the hon, member for South Simcoe would find insfead that 'he had empbasized the misconduct of those who sought to force this amendment, He would add a little further to his remarks on this curious chap. tor on the politicai history of this country, which was attompted to be writtenr by hon, gentlomen opposite and their now leader, Thore was on the bth of b.'cbruary, 1876, a glebnt:s upon the proposed increaso to Min-- isters' salaries, and also with reference to the proposed increase in the indemnity to imnembers, . Et was reported in the organs of both the political parties, and in the Mail of the Ith of February they would find the following report of Mr. Cameron on the motion for concurrence on the report of the Committee of Supply. Mr, Cameron |
