He seid :--Mr. Speaker, it is not my inteation, in presenting the annual statement of the firancial position of the Province, to detain the HMouse at any great length,. 'The Public Accounts and Esti-- mates are so full that a very cursory examin-- ation of those documents by the members will give a fair idea of what the transactions | of th. ° Province have been for the year. | But | for the general {)uhliv, who are not furnished with copies of the Public Accounts, it is ad-- visable that a short summary of the particu-- lars should be given, so that they may receive, through the mediumof the press, the informa-- tion which could'not reagh them tHrough any other source. 'This has 'wcomu an establish-- ed custom, and very necessary one too. On the last occasmon that I presented my state-- ment to the House it was expéected, accord-- ing to that statement, that the transactions for 1885 would show an excess of expendi-- turs . over receipts, or that there would hbe, to ; use a word that has been very frequently | used of late years_by hon. gentlemen op: | posite, a deficit. That delicit was expected ® 10 lse about £148,000,. I am happy to be able | to say, at the close of the year, that the finknces of the country are in a better }'-afiit'ion than awe exrpevrpd.
