Mr. HUDSON called attention to the report of his speech of yesterday in 'I'r® GtonrE and other journals which made it appear that he had declared he had not received support from any Roman Catholics. He did nog mean to say that he had lost all his former supporters of the Catholic faith. But some of those who had formerly voted for him stated to him that they could not support him longer, having re-- ceived orders to support the Mowat Govern-- ment. CLARKE asked for information as to the large number of persons of unsound mind said to be confinecd in the gaols of the Province. Hon. A,. 8. HARI, said there were 87 per-- sons of this class in the gaols last year, and, including these, ahout 140 applicants for ad-- mission to the asylums. 'The crowded state of the asylums was to some extent duo to the pre-- sence of harinless imbeciles who might just as well be contined in refuges established by the counties, and the Government was urgingy the counties to establish such refuges, He said there were 200 idiots for whom applications had been made, and who would find accomino-- dation when the enlargement of the Orillia asylum was completed, Mr, INCGRAM inquired atout an item for cab hire from the Central prison to St. Mich-- ael's cathedral. Hon. A. 8. HARDY explained that this was paid in connection with religious services at the Central prison, and that there was a grant of $750 last year to the Prisoners' Aid Associa-- tion, which was a Protestant association form-- ed for the purpose of CaRrRYING OX RELICGTIOUS SERVICES at the prison.
