This matter was taken up by private enter-- | prise so far back as 1832, when the Grand ' | River Navigation Company was incorpor-- | ated, whose works in due course fell into the hands of the Haldimana Navigation Com-l' It was set forth in a petition to the mwt-uovernor that the nuavigation of the .giver was. now practically ended. for want of means to keep up the works, that the water power formerly existing was for the most part destroyed, and that the , industries that formerly _ existed were now _ nearly extinguighed. _ In view of the necessity for keeping up the works, the petitioners asked that His Ex-- Bellency would eause to be placed on the estimates a sum of money to aid in the completion and maintenance of the works. In suoport of the petition it was pointed out that the Government had granted simi-- lar aid to Railway Companies and to other ; works of a like nature undertaken to assist in déveloping the resources of the country. The correspondences scloses with a lettor ' from Mr. Lumeden, the Assistant Becretary, | to Mr. Jacob Baxter, M.PP., intimating | that the subject would receive the consider-- ation of the Government.
