LOGS MUST BR ® SAWN IN CANADA |of April, 1898, shall contain ahd be sub-- jJect to the condition that all pine which may be cut into logs or otherwise un-- der the authority or permission of such license or permit shall, except as here-- inafter provided, be manufactured into sawn lumber in Canada, that is to say, |into beards, deals, joists, lath, shingles Lor other sawn lumber, or into waney Parliament Buildings, Dec. 20, 1897. Not in the spirit of retaliation, but as a justifiable measure of defence, the Ontario Government has submitted to the Legislature the proposition that Canadian logs should be manufactured 'ln Canada by Canadian workmen. The | Liberal enthusiasm which attended the announcement of the policy of the Gov-- ernment in the House to--day attested the fact that they have taken not only the popular view of the timber ques-- {tion, but the one which most appeals itu the self--respect of Canadians. Not | only is it in keeping with the feeling of ' national honor, but it harmonizes with | the patriotic aspiration that the bene-- lfits to be derived from the development "ot the great natural resources of the |country shall accrue so far as possible |to Canada and her people. Hon. Mr. | Gibson, Commissioner of Crown Lands, 'introduced the measure embodying. the policy of the Government, and accom-- panied it with a calm, lucid and com-- prehensive statement of the situation, explaining the conditions which have necessitated the present action, and, among other things, making plain the responsibility of the United States Con-- | gress. Briefly stated, the Government |proposes that licenses issued after Ap-- |1H1~30, 1898, shall "ceontain & condition | that pine timber shall be manufactured in Canada. This restriction does not I affect exigting licenses. Al future sales of timber limits shall be subject llo the manufacturing condition.
