The conten- tion of the representatives for the town is that the county has treated the town unfairly th many respects. espe- cially in hnposruttrorrrron it the entire cost cf the maintenance of Yonge street" As the result of a compromise follow- ing arbitration, an agreement was ar- rived at by which the town was to con- tribute tgfto per annum to the county, instead of 81.600, in formerly. The rate- payers of the town by sixty majozi'ty voted in favor of separation. and are now awaiting the nrcclamation neces- sary to give effect to their requmt. On behalf of the county it was urged that it was contrary to public policy to allow small municipalities to go out from the county. that the town had heen treated the inane M other munici- palities and had no grievance, and. thirdly, that tho town had not the. re- quired population to constitute it a town, although it had been so denomin- ated by special act. The Attorney-General informed the deputation that tho Government would be compelled to carry out the law as " stands. that careful examination of the law would be made, and if it was found that the town had the right to separate; there would he no option but to issue the proclamation.
