TUESDAY, MARCH 14, ~~--_-- L changes in Schedule For Trust and Telephone Companies. DISTILLERS' TAX HIGHER. Opposition to Civil Engineers Be-- coming Close Corporation -- Bills Before Private Bills Committee, Parliament Buildings, March 12. ' Hon. Geo. W. Ross led the House this ; afternoon, in the absence of the At-- torney--General, who, although improv-l ed in health, did not think it wise to undertake the task. A number of billsl of a public and private character werel advanced a stage, but many of the members were either atseont or unpre-- pared to go on with the bills to which their names are attached, and the cry ; "stand" became monotonous as order after order was read by the Clerk with-- out eliciting any other responso. Be-- fore the House closed Mr. Whitney ex-- pressed his regret at the slow progress made owing to the dilatoriness of mem-- ' bers; and acquitted the Government of | any responsibility in the matter. The only bill which elicited other than per-- functory discussion was that rospecting civil engineers, to which Mr.> Hoyle took exception, and Hon. Geo. W. Ross expressed the opinion that the House would not consent to any legislation which would tend to create a close cor-- | poration. He intimated that the ob-' jectionable clauses would be eliminat-- ed in the Legal Committee. The Pro-- vinclal Treasurer has given notice of further amendments to the schodule of taxation for trust and telephone com-' panies and distillers. The Provincial Treasurer to--night gave notice of resclutions providing for further changes in the scheme of taxa-- tion as embodied in -- the biHis before the House. The changes affect trust com-{ paniés and telephone companics, and distillers. In the case of trust companies the clause under which they are taxfldl reads as follows:--"Every trust com-- pany which transacts business in the Province of Ontarto shall pay a tax of $250 where the paid--up capital is 81('0.-] HHHSNSSSSNSSN en
